The Gibson Custom Shop has re-created the guitar that Peter Frampton played on his multiplatinum live album from 1976. Distinctive features include a mahogany back with weight-relief chambers, the Peter Frampton custom slim neck profile, and three Gibson humbuckers: '57 Classic (neck), '57 Classic Plus (middle), and 500T (bridge). The 3-way pickup selector is wired so the middle pickup is always on and can combined with front or rear pickups. Originally intended to bring a new style to the Les Paul line, the SG was renamed in 1963. With its ultra-thin, double-cutaway body, the SG was lighter than the Les Paul and allowed freer access to the upper register both features that rockers immediately appreciated. This reissue guitar features a mahogany body, Maestro tailpiece, 1960 slim-taper neck profile, vintage tulip tuners, and Burstbucker pickups.

In 1959, the Les Paul Standard made a change to wider, fatter jumbo frets which made it a more facile guitar. The significance of this change wouldn't be felt until the late '60s when Clapton, Bloomfield, Peter Green, and other emerging guitarists discovered its warm, thick BurstBucker voice and fast, smooth and easy-playing neck. Then the Les Paul began its ascent toward ultimate icon status. This guitar is number 003 of the Pilot Run and an instant collectable.
Everything that made the original 1958 Les Paul great is found on this prototype. The Figured Maple Top is carved to original spec but the Maple Top is carved on the underside to mirror the top carve creating an acoustic chamber between the Maple Top and the solid Mahogany Body. The Top and Body are joined in the center of the guitar to support the pickups and tailpiece. The Double Carve has a defined upper end that is more airy and open sounding than a regular R8. The low end is rich and round with a smooth resonant response that is woody and open sounding. Overall tone and attack are between a fully Chambered LP and regular Solid R8.
The neck is also one-piece mahogany with the historically correct long neck tenon for sustain. The early '50s neck profile is FAT and rounded for comfort. The nut is carefully hand-shaped to give it a more rounded, vintage look. The VOS finish gives the guitar the look and feel of a well cared for 50-year-old Standard. The rosewood fingerboard has Gibson's distinctive trapezoid inlays. The stop tailpiece is lightweight aluminum, and the tuners are vintage tulip style, just like the original.

The master craftsmen at Gibson Custom have recreated Billy Gibbons' Pearly Gates in excruciating detail - right down to the last scratch and ding. The Gibson Custom Shop and Billy Gibbons himself took painstaking steps to make sure the replica of this sacred instrument is true to its every form. Built like Billy's original Pearly Gates in every way: No detail was overlooked. There's all nickel hardware, gold top hat control knobs, vintage Kluson-style tulip tuners, and a lightweight aluminum string-over stopbar that lets you set up the strings just like Billy. The one-piece mahogany neck with a 1959 rounded profile also sports the same long-neck tenon found in every Les Paul Standard from Gibson's Golden Era. You also get period-correct CTS potentiometers and bumble bee capacitors.
The highly figured maple top on this guitar was carefully selected to have the same grain pattern as the "Pearly Gates" and it really does! It's as beautiful as the top that adorns the original and the Billy Gibbons' finish is perfect! The naturally darkened edges give way to the beautiful patterns of the maple grain. Even the red mahogany back is a perfect match! Equipped with Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbuckers, this guitar really has the MOJO!. These pickups are "sweet, but slightly rude, with great sustain and a bright top end that make harmonics jump out of the guitar. Gibbons uses Pearly Gates only in the studio. In concert, he relies on Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates humbuckers to replicate its legendary tone.

The SG originally was intended as a Les Paul redesign and addressed what many considered the 2 main issues players had with the Les Paul: weight and upper fretboard access.
