Graham Oliver was recording with his band Saxon in Atlanta with Jeff Glixman, the record producer, in the 1980’s. Jeff met someone who had a very rare early Gibson V and told them to fetch it to the studio, which they did a few days later, and Jeff bought it. Graham asked if they ever came across a black Flying V like Hendrix’s with Trini Lopez inlays (not realizing there was only one). The Dealers said they new someone that had a Relic® from a Jimi gig in ‘68 in Atlanta; Graham expressed an interest and about a week later they came with this neck - the head stock was split off below the machine heads where the FENDER® Logo would be, and it was stamped 13 Oct 67, and stamped “demo” on base also - it had traces of car spray paint on it as well, an almost identical lot was sold as lot 103 at Sotheby’s in 87 from the Albert Hall 69. On Graham’s return from the USA, he took the neck to luthier Stuart Palmer, who restored the neck with a piece of maple, and stripped it of paint, and put in heavy frets as a couple were missing; it came out great! In 1985 Saxon employed John Downing (or “Upsy”) - he worked for Jimi, January to August 1969 and is in many photos from that time - John confirmed that FENDER® supplied the Experience with necks marked “demo”. To be sold neck only; as is (restored). Comes with letter from Graham Oliver. 12,000 Britsh Pounds Sterling. more information »
