Here is some history: In 1959, in the infancy of rock ‘n’ roll, the name Jansen was well known by New Zealand’s musical fraternity. Starting business in Upper Queen Street in Auckland, Mr. Bruce Eady and Mr. Jack Collins repaired pianos and assembled amplifiers with the help of four other technicians. Short supply of locally made Concord amplifiers for the rapidly growing music industry led Bruce and Jack to get together and start a small production line on the first floor of the Methodist Central Mission building opposite the Town Hall. Fired with enthusiasm, Bruce then had a factory built in Pollen Street, Grey Lynn and ventured into building guitars and organs. The organs had to be built from scratch as no pre-assembled keyboards were available. From there Jansen moved into premises nearby the Heard’s sweet factory in Parnell. The Ruskin Street factory turned out many of Jansen’s now famous guitars. Around 1965 the semi-acoustic “International” guitar was produced. This guitar featured active pickups and had innovative tone selecting circuitry. Many of the guitars produced in those days have become collector’s items. Guitar Player magazine featured an article showing a Jansen solid body “Beatmaster” displayed in New York’s Hard Rock Café. Solid Body and semi-acoustic models were all hand made by technicians and craftsmen until 1971. Jansen guitars and amplifiers were manufactured by Beverly Bruce and Goldy Ltd., who continued to produce amplifiers and P.A. gear through the late 1980s. During the 1960s and 1970s, Jansen guitars were the most popular brand in New Zealand. One notable U.S. example of Jansen guitars was the Jazzman model that was used by the Surfaris.
