The Lone Star is Chuck's "workhorse" banjo with all the fit and finish of his other models, clean peghead lines, a Dobson-style heel and a frailing scoop. It has a laminated neck with veneers running up each side of the center strip for strength, but without laminations under the peghead and fingerboard, 25.5" scale, double action truss rod, bone nut measuring 1-11/32 to 1-3/8", ebony fingerboard. The peghead sports an ebony overlay with 5 Star tuning pegs, and the wooden tone ring sits on an 11" Tony Pass 3" x 1/2" x 11" birch rim with a Renaissance head, 14 brackets, and No Knot tailpiece. In the 1970's, Rolfe Gerhardt, maker of Phoenix mandolins, made Unicorn mandolins. He set aside some of his best Douglas Fir top wood for future use, and that future is now. The Commemorative Unicorn has Gerhardt's signature double-cutaway body, very highly flamed red maple back, sides & neck, very finely grained Douglas fir top, fir tone bar bracing, f-holes, pearl-dot inlaid radiused ebony fretboard, adjustable bridge with "timeless timber" maple base & ebony saddle, ebony peghead overlay with pearl unicorn inlay, moose bone nut, cast tailpiece, nickle hardware, and gloss vintage maple-burst finish.
