When Paul Smith started building guitars, he did it to match his passion for music with his admiration of the artistry of guitar building. Little did he know that he would make an indelible mark on the guitar world when he began production of the PRS Custom 24 in 1985.
To honor these fabled guitars, Guitar Center Platinum has teamed up with Paul Reed Smith to produce the PRS Custom 24 Throwback Series. Limited to a total production of 100 guitars and offered in an assortment of six colors, these guitars pay tribute to that first year of production. Details such as a small neck heel, a reproduction Mann one-piece bridge, locking winged tuners, Sweet Switch, 5909 pickups and original-style blue-lined case were included in the design of this fantastic guitar.
Also included with this guitar is an extra set of replicated 1985 T&B pickups, extra set of lampshade knobs, a letter of authenticity and a back plate signed by Paul Smith.

Following in the footsteps of Ted's innovative spirit, this new guitar combines all the traditional features of the original McCarty Model with cutting edge pickups. These passive "Narrowfield" pickups narrow the sensory field of the string much like a singlecoil but are hum canceling. The result is a new sounding pickup with blended features of single coil, soap bar and humbucking pickups. It is a new sound with traditional flavor.

Here is a brand new McCarty 58 finished in Black Gold. Ted McCarty left an enduring legacy that serves as an inspiration to guitar makers and musicians worldwide. He was also a life-changing mentor to Paul Reed Smith. The McCarty 58 pays homage to both this legendary man and traditional humbucking tone.
The McCarty 58 incorporates the following new features:
V12 Finish
Finish should enhance the look, sound, and feel of a guitar by accentuating the wood's inherent beauty and feel without hindering its natural resonance. And PRS Guitars' new "V12" finish does just that. Introduced at Experience PRS 2010, "V12" is a very thin, hard, and clear finish that will not crack or react with thinners. After roughly 12 years in development, it is halfway between acrylic and nitro but with a classic feel all its own. "PRS models with this new finish feel like old instruments," said Paul Reed Smith.
Pattern Neck Shape
Neck shapes have always been a high priority for PRS and a hallmark of their quality. A guitar should feel comfortable, like "home," as soon as you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. Perfected after years of prototyping, the new "Pattern" neck is an updated Wide Fat PRS neck-style based on Paul's pre-factory design. These necks were found on the instruments built for Carlos Santana, Peter Frampton, and Howard Leese from the late '70s to the mid '80s.
Whether in woodworking, machining, or cast and die work, patternmaking is the art of arriving at a perfect standard that can be duplicated or used to create new designs from by "offsetting." All PRS necks came to be as a result of offsetting from this original, Wide Fat design.
PRS Guitars Phase III tuners are new to the line up for 2011 and will come standard on SC 58, McCarty 58, ME Quatro, and JA-15 models. These very smooth, high-tolerance pegs feature an elegant design with larger buttons, an open back, and closed housing.
