This is not a book of transcribed solos....it is a method book for the development of an improvisational style where you can play bebop lines in chords.....like Wes did. The cover says: "A guide for developing a chordal vocabulary for improvisation. Written with the styles of Wes Montgomery, Cal Collins, and Barney Kessel in mind". In the introduction, the author makes the following comment....."There are many books which deal with chord forms, comping, and chord-melody playing, but these do not provide a vocabulary for the kind of harmonized soloing that Wes and others have done. In "How to Play Chordal Bebop Lines" the goal is to develop a vocabulary for improvising in lines of chords." Table of contents reflects chapters dealing with commonly used voicings, chord scales, and inversions of many types of chords, leading to section 2 of the book which is actual phrases and patterns in chords....(much like Jerry Coker's Patterns for jazz, only the lines are in chords, for guitar.) Melodic lines, in chords, are written with a melody line and a fret diagram underneath each melody note. Poor readers can beneftit greatly from this style of writing. Book is 80 pages in length with nice spiral binding. This text is a must for the student who is exploring chordal improvisation in the Wes style. 2 Ways to install:
1. Use the pre-existing hardware on your case...the handle is an exact fit. Comes with two axles which will give you a pro installation look. Axles are installed by ball-peining one end to create a 'burr'...this is how they are installed at the factory.
OR.......2. Use the hardware provided that is an exact replacement for many of the brown 50's cases. The new handle hardware is made permanent to the handle by tapping the axle into the clip, making it flush with the post. Also comes with two metal plates that go inside the case for greater stability. Excellent and stable system will last a lifetime.

Volume 2, with nice spiral binding, contains the following transcribed solos: Billies Bounce, Bock to Bock, Delilah (Take 4), Doujie, Freddied the Freeloader, Fried Pies (Take 1), Lolita, Monterey Blues (D Natural Blues), SKJ, and WIllow Weep for Me. Solos are captured in their entirety, notes to octaves to chords. There is an analysis of each solo which illustrates the favored licks and devices used by Wes. This 70 page text continues the work of Volume I (which is to develop the technique of improvising in lines of chords in the Wes style) but adds more patterns. It also contains actual solo phrases and excerpts from the work of Barney Kessel, Wes Montgomery, and Cal Collins. The text is written in the same easy-to-read style as Volume 1 with every chord presented in diagram form, over a simple melody line.......as in volume I, you do not have to be able to read music to navigate this book.
Table of contents reflects three large sections: (1) exercises in voice leading and use of modern voicings, (2) a new collection of patterns of chordal bebop lines, and (3) solo excerpts, with a discussion about how the three masters (mentioned above) arrived at and used their unique chordal vocabulary. Solo excerpts are all notated in a simple melody with chord diagrams written above. Non-readers can simply play the consecutive chord boxes and thus play the line! Excerpts include Wes' complete improvised chordal solos on Delilah (two takes), Missile Blues, and West Coast Blues. Barney's solo excerpts include phrases from Autumn Leaves, You're the One for Me, and The Look of Love.
Quite a bit of discussion material is devoted to the importance of internalizing the vocabulary you are working on, as well as a methodology for practicing so that this will take place. Whereas Volume I lays a foundation for this style, and includes studies of patterns, chord scales, and chord inversions, Volume II devotes more space to longer and more complex patterns. Gibson ordinarily used the confetti sheetstock on wine red and natural finishes...but it works fine on sunburst too (see detail pic below...guard is held against a sunburst finish on an Eastman guitar).
Guard would work great on most archtop acoustics including Gretsch Synchromatic and Epiphone Emperor. Perfect factory pickup route can be enlarged if your floating pickup is l;arger than the standard Gibson size.
