Scott Walker Custom Guitars
by Premier Guitar
New from Scott Walker Custom Guitars comes the Barry Sless model.
New from Scott Walker Custom Guitars comes the Barry Sless model. Based off models created for guitarist and pedal steel guru, Barry Sless, while Walker was still working with the Santa Cruz Guitar Company, he has brought his high-end craftsmanship to the public.
The Barry Sless model comes with a sunburst quilted maple top, mahogany back and neck, your choice in pickups, a built-in effects loop, Jangletone Unity Gain Buffer, a 25” scale length, and a 1 11/16” nut. This one-man-shop specializes in custom guitar building and offers models in a variety of woods and specs. Because the guitars are each custom built to customer orders, the options are endless.
Scott Walker began tinkering with electronics at an early age, dissecting every tape player and sewing machine he could find. At age 13, a heavy fascination with acoustic guitars lured Walker into installing a pickup he had from an old gutted bass guitar. Fifteen years later, Walker found himself the shop foreman at Santa Cruz Guitar Company.
In his time with Santa Cruz, Scott mastered neck carving and overall construction of the acoustic guitar, Santa Cruz style. On nights and weekends, he spent time in his own shop finessing solid body designs he had been working on. It was at that point that he began collaborating with Barry Sless. After building several guitars for Barry and other local musicians, Walker decided to open shop.
Scott Walker Custom Guitars now offers five basic models based on one main shape (seen here). Alongside the previously mentioned Barry Sless model, Walker has created the Trinity, a three pickup guitar with a 25.5” scale, a 1 11/16” nut, with an exotic top and a mahogany back and neck. The Inspiration is a 24.75” scale, two humbucker guitar. The Uroura is a semi-hollow, one-piece mahogany body and mahogany neck. Finally, Walker has introduced the Surelight, weighing 5 pounds with a choice of top and back, and featuring a Western Red cedar core and a Spanish cedar neck. Each guitar is sprayed with a nitrocellulose finish by specialist Adam Stark.
Customers often request pickups by Jason Lollar, Lindy Fralin, Rio Grande, DiMarzio, or Seymour Duncan. Scott Walker guitars come with a “custom options” package that gives the client room to make adjustments to meet their own needs. This includes changing scale length, nut width, hardware, woods, pickups, and switching, all of which is common, meaning you’ll get an instrument made specifically to your needs.
All Scott Walker guitars are built with a post volume effects loop (unless specified). This allows the guitar’s signal to be sent to your effects, back up to the guitar’s volume and then out to the amp. There is a mini toggle switch that allows the guitarist to engage the effects loop or bypass it and go straight to the amp.
To finish off the guitar, each is shipped with a Cedar Creek custom hardshell case to protect your investment.
