Flight of the Bumblebee

Mike Campese

Practicing the first half of the classical tune

Premier Guitar June 2008

Welcome back! This lesson we'll be looking at "Flight of the Bumblebee." I will show you an excerpt from this well-known classic piece of music that sounds like bees in flight. If you are looking to build your technique on the guitar, this is the one to work on. It is one of the first pieces I learned when I first started playing and working on my technique.

If you have been working on those four finger exercises I showed you in my previous lessons, this should be easier for you. This whole piece is based from the chromatic scale, using all 16th notes in 2/4 time; be sure to accent all the downbeats. If you are looking for ways to learn how to use the chromatic scale in a practical situation, this piece will help you tremendously.

When practicing this, make sure both of your hands are moving in sync at the tempo you are working at and, please, don't go too fast too soon! If you are not ready to play it at lightning speed, slow it down so both hands are together. You might want to follow the suggested fingerings I supplied. Also, let me know if you want me to cover the second half next month.
