VOX Ultrasonic

Premier Guitar November 2008

The Vox Ultrasonic incorporated classic Vox effects into an acoustic-electric guitar, including distortion, treble boost, bass boost, wah-wah and more. This short-lived guitar was made in 6 and 12-string models from 1967-68 and came in Sunburst or Cherry finishes.

This Sunburst model resides in the UK with Jules Haffegee, who has made sound clips of the guitar available at vintageguitars.org.uk/voxUltrasonic2.php.

Karl- I am a proud owner of a Cherry Ultrasonic. I traded for this guitar in summer of '93 and still play it. Strange...the case has an obvious flood mark. You can easily see the discoloration about a foot long on the yellow felt inside. Hmmm...

I even used it for a talk in speech class in College in 1969! The subject-how to tune a guitar-then I just had to play a short song with a little bit oof a riff: "Sunshine of your love"

Hi Glen - I used to own one in 1968 - bought it from a guy who was drafted - mine was cherry, and sounded great! It was flooded in 1972 in the Summer, and floated in the case for 3 days. I traded it even up for an Epiphone 5 string banjo in in Summer 1974(Washington D.C.) It sure was a fine guitar - played in bands with it too

I am the proud owner of a cherry red Ultrasonic 12 serial 403418. Apparently they were only made for a couple of years but I'd love to find out how to accurately date them. The difference of the 12 string model seems to be a different headstock (to support the 12 tuners) and no VOX logo on the tailpiece. I love the BritPop sound of this guitar but as with all 12 strings, it's difficult to tune.
