1978 Greco EG-700 Replica Les Paul

A Greco Les Paul from the lawsuit era.

Premier Guitar December 2009

As discussed in our feature story on counterfeit guitars, many of today’s bogus brand name imitations lack any semblance of quality materials or workmanship. That, however, was not the case from the late 1960s to early 1980s, when various Japanese guitar makers were busy making inexpensive “replicas” of some of the world’s most iconic guitar designs.

The Greco brand of “replica” guitars was started by the Kanda Shokai Corporation in 1966, and is widely considered to be one of the best. Fueled by the popularity of bands like Led Zeppelin and other British invasion artists, the company was producing copies of Gibson’s Les Paul Standard by the early 1970s using scaled drawings derived from Gibson catalogs, and photos of musicians using real Gibson guitars. The company even enlisted the services of popular Japanese guitarist Shigeru Narumo to supervise its production of the Greco line, which gave a tremendous boost to its sale of Les Paul replicas.

By the mid-to-late 1970s, the company was making a Les Paul copy that rivaled the craftsmanship of its authentic U.S. counterpart—at prices far below those of the real McCoy. This 1978 Greco EG-700 is an exquisite example of those guitars. It features a beautiful Cherry Sunburst finish, set-neck construction with medium tenon joint, non-original Grover-like tuners and gold top-hat control knobs. The only discernable difference would be its headstock, which is slightly narrower and longer than a typical Les Paul’s. Other than that, it’s a stunning example of Japanese six-string ingenuity from the 1970s.

Oh yeah, and it plays like buttah!

I have recently got hold of a nuramo les paul Gneco EG650, it has a set neck but the body is semi hollow. This guitar dates back to around 1975/76, The neck is more like a les paul custom in design with the block markers and it has a cutaway for comfort at the back of the body. Many people slag these seventies guitars off but i have to say this is one of the best sounding and les pauls i have ever played. And i have played a few, i also own a les paul studio and my mate has a les paul custom and he even admits this guitar sounds just as good if not better.

I just recently bought a greco rs 90, somewhat rare I believe, it is a hollow body model that sort of resembles a gibson ES 137. The quality is absolutely superb, and the sound amazing. If I wanted to get a Gibson of similar quality, I'd have to fork out three or four times as much as I laid down for the greco. I think my next guitar will be a greco les paul copy, or maybe a tokai.

I just bought one of these through e-bay. I was a little skeptical, but playing the guitar I was hugely impressed. I've played a lot of LP copies and real LP and this one I have is as good as the real thing. Pleasantly surprised.

I have 4 of these (1 tokai, 2 Greco's and 1 Edwards). I also have a Les Paul Heritage Elite '80, that I use as the benchmark. The "copies" are absolutely outstanding and are of the highest quality. I love Gibsons, but the really cool ones are simply too expensive. But you can find a Tokai or a Greco that is as cool, at a FRACTION of the price.

Hi. Can't say much about the LP's but I got a Greco Super Sounds Strat and it is way better than anything on the market with the "F" logo, in fact this delivers the classic Mark Knofler sound from "Sultans... ', plays like a dream, stays in tune, and is just pure joy to play. Competes in every way with my 73 Strat but just seems to do it better. I've since added a Tokai Silver Star and a Fernandes the Function to my collection. All 3 for the price of one new Made in Mexico Strat and each leaves it in the dust.
