I opened the tweed case for the Carvin CS6M not knowing what to expect. I was immediately amazed at its beauty and sleek looks. I was attracted to its flawless finish and features immediately. In fact, I didn’t even take it out of the case right away. Instead, I chose to just look and admire it for a while! The Carvin CS6M is indeed a thing of beauty. It’s made in the USA at Carvin’s Custom Shop in San Diego, CA.

Features
This particular model features a premium bookmatched 4A quilted maple top in a deep antique brown finish, with a matching quilted maple headstock overlay. It has gorgeous abalone block inlays on a 25” scale ebony fingerboard, with medium jumbo frets. The body is premium mahogany with set-neck construction. The headstock features Sperzel locking tuners, and an attractive 24k gold-plated Carvin logo.

Although many of these features are standard on the CS6M, there are plenty of options to customize your own Carvin, which continues the guitars-made-to-order tradition that Carvin is known for. You can choose any combination of high-quality woods, finishes, electronics and hardware to create your own custom instrument. This guitar came with two metal-covered humbucking S22 pickups by Carvin, with a three-way pickup selector. It also features two Volume and two Tone knobs with coil splitters as an available option, as opposed to the standard one Volume, one Tone knob configuration.

By the way, here’s a quick word about Carvin’s nomenclature for this model of set-neck electric guitars. The CS stands for California Single, as in single cut-away. The CS6 is their top of the line guitar in this series. For those guitarists who desire the same high-quality features and construction as the CS6 but without the exotic top woods, Carvin offers the CS4, which has a plain maple top standard, and also the CS3, which features a carved, solid piece of mahogany with no top wood. The M in the name refers to Carvin’s M bridge, which is a fully adjustable tune-o-matic bridge with strings fed through the body for added sustain. You can also choose Carvin’s S bridge (which is a classic tune-o-matic/stoptail bridge), a Wilkinson tremolo or a genuine Floyd Rose tremolo.

Another cosmetic feature that I really like on the CS6M is the natural body binding. It’s a process where the edges of the maple top are masked before the finish is applied. The result is a natural, unstained wood around the perimeter of the guitar top. It looks great with the quilted top and adds a nice color contrast to the guitar.

I have to agree with a lot of the posters. Price should be taken completely out of the equation, leaving only the things that count. That being quality, is it good or bad. In Carvin's case, it's incredible. There are guitars that are as good, but few or none that are better.

I have two Carvin guitars (CS, TL) and a 6-string fretless bass. These instruments are incredible value and extremely well made. May a custom guitar costing 4-5x the price might be a match but I doubt it. They look great, play well and sound fantastic. All the "name" brands (even PRS) are making some or all of their parts (and guitars) in Asia, as the labour is cheap. Nothing comes close to the Carvin quality and value for money. Oh and Steve Vai uses their heads and speakers. Downrightdaft is a bit of eejit. He sound buy one and try it at a gig!

I just recieved my custom ordered ST300C. It is amazing! The finish is perfect. The guitar was set up just as I asked, (almost-wrong guage strings), and when plugged in, its electrics/Active Passive pick-ups produced sounds to die for! Now, if only the fret job was up to par with the rest of the guitar. The ONLY problem I can find is that the high E string rolls off the edge of the fret board when hammered on and off/pulled on and off etc... I spoke with the tech at their main office in SanDiego where I was assured it would be remidied-asap.
So, yeah, I'm a little bummed that I have to send the guitar back, after waiting 6+ weeks for it.
However, what's one more week for a guitar I probubly will own for many years to come?
I was a little weary, ordering the Active Electronics, but they do have a warmth to them. Oh, and the Floyd was set up perfectly! I "was" stricktly a Les Paul guy. I never thought I'd own a SuperStrat. Over all 8. If the frets were dressed correctly, a 10+!

I owned a Carvin 100 2X12 combo back in the early 80's. It was awesome. Last Christmas I ordered a Belair 2X12 combo, looking for a vintage type amp. I'm really happy with the amp. While I was on the Carvin website, I noticed how beautiful their guitars looked. I'm not a fan of buying a guitar without playing it first, but Carvin's 10 return policy kept me from being scared away. I ordered an SH550 with a flamed Koa top/Sunsetburst edges. When the guitar showed up, I opened the case and was blown away. It looked incredible and played great. And, it was in tune right out of the box, which is unbelievable since it was shipped from the west coast to the east coast and took 5 days to get here. Anyway, a few months later, I ordered a CT6M. Again, I was blown away. Right now, I'm waiting for my new AE185 to show up. I'm sold. I've been playing guitar for 35 years and have owned over 100 guitars. The Carvin guitars that I have are among the nicest guitars I've ever played. Oh yeah, the prices are incredible for the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.

I hate to jump on the Bamd wagon, but Carvin is the best value out there.

I recently bought a lefty CS4 with the stop tail piece, it is just a stunning instrument. Left handers in particular love Carvin as they are our one choice for quality guitars in more than one finish! Carvin ROOOCKS!

This is Gary Guzman - the one that wrote this review. I feel that I have to respond to Downrightdaft's rude comments about my review. Just to clear things up, when I said in the review that I opened up the case not knowing what to expect, that was 100% true. Premier Guitar had told me they were sending me a Carvin guitar to review, but I wasn't told what model it was, what color it was or what it looked like previously to receiving it. So of course I didn't know what to expect. I played this guitar and like many others on here who submitted positive comments about Carvin, really enjoyed it. So how is that biased?

I own three Carvin guitars, A V220M, SC90M and Bolt kit as well as some other Carvin gear. They are excellent guitars, easily the equal of instruments costing 2-3 times as much. For the price of a decent import, you get a beautiful, high quality guitar, custom-built to YOUR specifications, and AMERICAN MADE as well. They have great action and playability and the finish and woods used are second to none. I will echo a previous poster in saying it's worth the extra few bucks for the stainless steel frets. After 18 months the frets on my V220 have ZERO fret wear.

I agree with this review except for the part where Gary stated the CS6 is way ahead of the DC127 in quality & playability. This is totally false. I own 10 Carvins including a CS6 & DC127 and they are all of superior quality and playability. That's why I love Carvin. They are the perfect example of consistancy. The stellar fretwork is what got me hooked on Carvin 20 years ago. I buy nothing else. My Les Paul is now a closet queen kept only for sentimental reasons. Oh yeah, make sure you get the stainless steel frets.

If you've never owned a Carvin, but demand the VERY HIGHEST QUALITY, treat yourself to one! You would think the prices could only be offered to Carvin employees or something. And no two are exactly alike! I'm totally spoiled and will never buy anything but Carvin now.
