Carvin's CS6M is a versatile, customizable tone machine with great build quality

Playability
When you pick up the CS6M and play it, you realize how well made this guitar really is. I was impressed with the high-quality construction and attention to detail. The ergonomic design felt good in my hands and was very comfortable to play. One feature I noticed right away was the smooth heel-less design for easy access to all frets. Most guitars with a set-in neck have a cumbersome heel, which makes playing the high frets a difficult task. I was able to play a B minor scale in 19th position flawlessly, which can be hard to pull off on other guitars—or it puts my hand in an awkward position because of the chunk of wood I have to get around! The neck actually sets five inches into the body and extends underneath the neck pickup, which allows for amazing sustain and greater stability. Carvin’s Rapid Play low-action neck offered excellent playability throughout the entire fingerboard, and it gives those who like to play fast the ability to shred with ease!

I have used the CS6M on many recording sessions lately—everything from a pop/punk band track to a jingle for a national sandwich meat commercial. The Carvin is versatile enough to handle any style of music. The S22 pickups offer a smooth, warm tone, and really bring out the sustain of the guitar. The coil splitters came in very handy in achieving a wide variety of tones and doubling the range of the pickups. I was able to get everything from a bluesy single-coil tone to a more funky, soulful tone with the combination of the neck pickup in single-coil setting and the bridge pickup in humbucker setting at the same time.

Plugging In
I plugged the CS6M into a variety of amps. With my Roland Jazz Chorus 120 amp, the guitar offered a well-balanced clean tone— very warm and bright at the same time. I then took the CS6M to the extreme and plugged it into my Marshall 1959RR Randy Rhoads head with a Marshall Lead 1960 cabinet. In a high-gain setting, the CS6M morphed into a metal machine! It offered a strong attack with tons of sustain. You can definitely rock out with these Carvin S22 pickups.

The Final Mojo
I have owned a Carvin DC127 guitar for many years, and the CS6M is leaps and bounds ahead of it, in terms of construction, quality and playability. I honestly couldn’t think of anything I didn’t like about this guitar. Carvin has always been known for making high-quality guitars that are built to a customer’s specifications, and they now offer even more choices for woods, finishes and custom options. By mixing and matching the many different options that Carvin now offers, you can have a guitar made in over 50,000 different combinations. Now that’s impressive! By selling direct, Carvin is able to offer incredible value for an amazing guitar. I also love the fact that Carvin provides a direct connection to your guitar builder. With many choices from a wide variety of materials, any guitarist can custom-make a Carvin CS6M into their dream guitar.

I have to agree with a lot of the posters. Price should be taken completely out of the equation, leaving only the things that count. That being quality, is it good or bad. In Carvin's case, it's incredible. There are guitars that are as good, but few or none that are better.

I have two Carvin guitars (CS, TL) and a 6-string fretless bass. These instruments are incredible value and extremely well made. May a custom guitar costing 4-5x the price might be a match but I doubt it. They look great, play well and sound fantastic. All the "name" brands (even PRS) are making some or all of their parts (and guitars) in Asia, as the labour is cheap. Nothing comes close to the Carvin quality and value for money. Oh and Steve Vai uses their heads and speakers. Downrightdaft is a bit of eejit. He sound buy one and try it at a gig!

I just recieved my custom ordered ST300C. It is amazing! The finish is perfect. The guitar was set up just as I asked, (almost-wrong guage strings), and when plugged in, its electrics/Active Passive pick-ups produced sounds to die for! Now, if only the fret job was up to par with the rest of the guitar. The ONLY problem I can find is that the high E string rolls off the edge of the fret board when hammered on and off/pulled on and off etc... I spoke with the tech at their main office in SanDiego where I was assured it would be remidied-asap.
So, yeah, I'm a little bummed that I have to send the guitar back, after waiting 6+ weeks for it.
However, what's one more week for a guitar I probubly will own for many years to come?
I was a little weary, ordering the Active Electronics, but they do have a warmth to them. Oh, and the Floyd was set up perfectly! I "was" stricktly a Les Paul guy. I never thought I'd own a SuperStrat. Over all 8. If the frets were dressed correctly, a 10+!

I owned a Carvin 100 2X12 combo back in the early 80's. It was awesome. Last Christmas I ordered a Belair 2X12 combo, looking for a vintage type amp. I'm really happy with the amp. While I was on the Carvin website, I noticed how beautiful their guitars looked. I'm not a fan of buying a guitar without playing it first, but Carvin's 10 return policy kept me from being scared away. I ordered an SH550 with a flamed Koa top/Sunsetburst edges. When the guitar showed up, I opened the case and was blown away. It looked incredible and played great. And, it was in tune right out of the box, which is unbelievable since it was shipped from the west coast to the east coast and took 5 days to get here. Anyway, a few months later, I ordered a CT6M. Again, I was blown away. Right now, I'm waiting for my new AE185 to show up. I'm sold. I've been playing guitar for 35 years and have owned over 100 guitars. The Carvin guitars that I have are among the nicest guitars I've ever played. Oh yeah, the prices are incredible for the level of craftsmanship and attention to detail.

I hate to jump on the Bamd wagon, but Carvin is the best value out there.

I recently bought a lefty CS4 with the stop tail piece, it is just a stunning instrument. Left handers in particular love Carvin as they are our one choice for quality guitars in more than one finish! Carvin ROOOCKS!

This is Gary Guzman - the one that wrote this review. I feel that I have to respond to Downrightdaft's rude comments about my review. Just to clear things up, when I said in the review that I opened up the case not knowing what to expect, that was 100% true. Premier Guitar had told me they were sending me a Carvin guitar to review, but I wasn't told what model it was, what color it was or what it looked like previously to receiving it. So of course I didn't know what to expect. I played this guitar and like many others on here who submitted positive comments about Carvin, really enjoyed it. So how is that biased?

I own three Carvin guitars, A V220M, SC90M and Bolt kit as well as some other Carvin gear. They are excellent guitars, easily the equal of instruments costing 2-3 times as much. For the price of a decent import, you get a beautiful, high quality guitar, custom-built to YOUR specifications, and AMERICAN MADE as well. They have great action and playability and the finish and woods used are second to none. I will echo a previous poster in saying it's worth the extra few bucks for the stainless steel frets. After 18 months the frets on my V220 have ZERO fret wear.

I agree with this review except for the part where Gary stated the CS6 is way ahead of the DC127 in quality & playability. This is totally false. I own 10 Carvins including a CS6 & DC127 and they are all of superior quality and playability. That's why I love Carvin. They are the perfect example of consistancy. The stellar fretwork is what got me hooked on Carvin 20 years ago. I buy nothing else. My Les Paul is now a closet queen kept only for sentimental reasons. Oh yeah, make sure you get the stainless steel frets.

If you've never owned a Carvin, but demand the VERY HIGHEST QUALITY, treat yourself to one! You would think the prices could only be offered to Carvin employees or something. And no two are exactly alike! I'm totally spoiled and will never buy anything but Carvin now.
