EWS Fuzzy Drive FD-1 Pedal Review

Art Byron

The Fuzzy Drive goes way beyond fuzz as a versatile box of effects

The pots themselves have a nice damped, quality feel to their movement, and you get the impression that this is a sturdy piece of gear that’s going to handle the road nicely. The Tone control also features a slight detent in the middle.

Although the FD-1’s claim to fame is as a fuzz box, using it only for only that is a little like saying that Angelina Jolie does a good job of playing Lara Croft. The fact of the matter is that the FD-1 is more like a distortion toolbox, capable of the full range of overdrive tones, from a slight break-up, to total metal mayhem. Truthfully, at many settings, it’s more “drive” than “fuzz,” and that’s what pushes it over the top for this reviewer. In a world where I could have only one box to do a whole range of overdrive sounds, I would really have to seriously consider the EWS Fuzzy Drive FD-1.

Ironically, the weakest point in the Fuzzy Drive’s repertoire is the classic mid-’60s buzz tone that can only come from discrete germanium transistors. We’re talking about the cheesiest tones in the speaker-slit-by-a-razor-blade category. Try as we might, we could not coax an ice-pick buzz-saw sound out of the FD-1. It came close, but always maintained a decidedly warm nuance. That’s just as well, because that’s a sound this reviewer would never try to find unless paid to.

The EWS box offers a lot of versatility, good build quality, and a boutique tone. Yet with a suggested retail price of $149, it’s squarely in average Joe territory. It’s interesting to note that sister company, Xotic, offers no fuzz pedals, so by entering the market first with the Fuzzy Drive, EWS is carving out a nice niche for itself that has little risk of impacting Xotic sales. We imagine some guys will be searching for a classic Tone Bender sound, and will try out the Fuzzy Drive, only to find that it’s more flexible, and a whole lot warmer. If it hits them like it hit us, the FD-1 will surely stoke the fires of creativity. We can’t wait to see what EWS comes out with next.
Buy if...
you're looking for a distortion toolbox that will kick your creativity with overdrive.
Skip if...
you're the guy they hired to create the soundtrack for Green Acres, the movie. Only an old Vox Tone Bender will do.

I can truly attest to the reviewers observations as being SPOT ON. Being a true eclectic with a budget, I LOVE what I can do with this pedal. I can go from absolutely searing to jazzy or even Dumble-like by simply using my volume knob. And now Mr. tone himself Carl Verheyen says he wants one. AWESOME!

I bought this as soon as I got my hands on it. My first "fuzz" box. I was shopping at Mr. Music in Boston and tried this baby out and right away it hit me like a truck. This was the sound for me. It's not too expensive since online you can get it for $120. go try it out. If nothing else, you'll have fun trying out a strange new style of fuzz/od.

I just in the last two months finally picked up a fuzzy drive. I already own way too many dirt and o/d boxes and an Xotic BB preamp (as anyone who owns Xotic pedals knows all too well)that this would be a quality pedal. I have 35+ years of playing literally all types and styles. Country/Country Rock/Classic Rock is where I have been for the last several years. Well suffice to say I run this at the front of the board right behind the tu-2 and it shines. My secret weapon....tele/strat into the fuzzy drive (drive- 2 o'clock, tone-10 o'clock to noon, volume 10 o'clock-noon) followed immediately by the BB (Gain- 9, Bass-1 to 2 o'clock, treble-1 to 2 o'clock, volume- noon) and then on to the delay to the amp. This pedal plays very well with others as do all the Xotic pedals. Is it a true blue tonebender- NO way but who cares, really? But does it get you very close, make you want to play better, have a very warm almost organic tone and cover tons of ground from all of the modern country to white stripes and beyond...A huge emphatic YES!!! Try one, you won't be sorry. you will buy it because it is that good. (Search Allen Hinds and Micheal Thompson for some very awesome tones with this pedal!!) All of my pedals live and die on my pedalboards for live performances and studio work only. If it didn't cut it it simply wouldn't be there because I have to cover so much territory musically from gig to gig. If you want a tonebender or TB clone get ready to shell out several hundered and hope hope the germanium transistors are stable. And finally, no I am not endorsed nor paid by E.W.S. or Xotic for my comments. I am simply a player who has found a great pedal that is bomb proof and sounds heavenly through a tube amp!!

Xotic makes great pedals. I personally owned the BB, AC, RC and Robotalk 1 and 2. The question on my mind is what would be my application for this pedal? Musically, I play Jazz, Blues,R&B and Fusion. I do love the sound.

I wish the reviewer compared the FD1 with Xotic AC pedal.

More research is needed!

There are just so many pedals on the market now, and most of them are very expensive. Everyone says they are all great. Everyone says that they are awful. This was a good review, Mr. Byron mentioned some things that told me he was listening and weighing his comments. I will try the E.W.S. and like it or not I'll note reviews by this writer in the future. I've been looking for a box all year and at first I thought it was called a Fuzz. Later in my quest I started calling it an overdrive, then distortion. Now I think it's just a box. I sold the Marshall, got a Twin, burnt up $200 in electronic parts, tried a hundred pedals and altered my "vintage" Rat and MXR +. Now I'm thinking about learning how to play the guitar. PEACE

Very interested in this pedal. I am wondering if this Fuzz suffers from the "picky about what goes in front of it" syndrome like many other fuzzes (like a wah, compressor, etc.)
I am thinking because it uses ICs and not the traditional germanium transitors it wouldn't be picky about using other pedals in from of it. But no one has covered this specifically.

Why present us with such a "produced" audio demo- can't we just hear the pedal solo? its a nice sounding fuzz, but there are other effects on that guitar too, not to mention the cheese band

I need one! I'm a big fan of all the Xotics pedals and this sounds like something I could really use.....
