Grant Green's D'Aquisto New Yorker

Grant Green's personal D'Aquisto now resides at Rudy's Music

Premier Guitar March 2009

This guitar was handmade for the very famous Grant Green in 1972. As Rudy Pensa tells the story, Grant Green’s son “told me about when he took a trip to D’Aquisto’s house with his father to pick up the instrument. He loved it so much that he spent days without putting the guitar down.”

This particular D’Aquisto is an 18” New Yorker in an amazing Tobacco Sunburst finish. The guitar has an incredible spruce top, beautiful flamed maple back and sides, maple neck with ebony fingerboard, and mother of pearl inlays. On the fingerboard you can see Grant Green’s name on mother of pearl. The headstock has the “New Yorker” inlayed in mother of pearl as well. Not only the guitar is extremely well made, but also it has an incredible sound.

After Grant Green’s death, the guitar belonged to George Benson’s collection for many years, until Rudy Pensa traveled to Arizona to photograph Benson’s collection, and he agreed to sell the guitar to Rudy. Now it belongs to Rudy, and it’s back in the family, among others, D’Angelico, D’Aquisto and Monteleone.

Condition, great player as it sits. Do not want a total rebuild. Crack or similar minor repair to be done is accectable. Looking for a cut-away. Thank You!! a.bernie@gmail.com

What happened to the Bill Lawrence Pickup? Taken from Guitar Player Magazine, January 1975 from the Grant Green article: "Grant says his D'Aquisto plays easier and sounds better than any guitar he has ever had. He says the neck shape and size is just right for him, allowing smooth playing; he describes the tone as funky and pretty at the same time. Aside from mother-of-pearl initials ("GG") inlaid in the fingerboard, the only other modification specifically for Grant is a specially-made pickup that was installed for him in place of the DeArmond pickup which came with the guitar. Bill Lawrence--at one time a design engineer with Gibson-- offered to make a special low-impedance pickup for Grant, just as he had done for Wes Montgomery. Grant accepted the offer and says his special pickup sounds better than the DeArmond, but adds that only Lawrence could explain why."
