1953 Epiphone Century

A gorgeous Epiphone electric hollowbody

Premier Guitar April 2010

Epiphone was founded in 1873 by Anastasios Stathopoulos, who initially built only fiddles and lutes in the Ottoman Empire (now Turkey). In the early 20th century, Stathopoulos and Epiphone made the move to Queens, New York, and expanded into building mandolins and banjos. Finally, in 1928 Epiphone built its first line of guitars, the Recording series. And in 1935, the company branched into the electrified world with the Electar Series (originally the Electraphone).

The Century model was introduced in 1939, and the 1953 model pictured here features a maple body with a sunburst finish, a rosewood fretboard and headstock, a New York neck pickup without adjustable poles, a Bakelite pickguard, a trapeze tailpiece and octagonal volume and tone controls with peaked facets.

It was rumored that the Century was used by Django Reinhardt during his only US tour in 1946 with Duke Ellington, but he actually used the bigger Epiphone Zephyr (also introduced in 1939) while in the States.

A special thanks to PG contributor Jeffrey O’Connor for this exquisite photograph.

I have a 1953 Century that looks as good as the one in the photo. Seems like such a low price for such a beautiful instrument. Belonged to my mother-in-law who played in a country western band in the 30's. (old Martin that I also have)

Value is of course in the eye of the beholder but for some reason, vintage electric Epiphones are under-appreciated and undervalued. Last week a '53 Century like this one (original case, missing pickguard) in great condition went for just $467! With 24 bids, this is an accurate "ebay value". Vintage Guitar Price Guide values this year and model at $1,000 (low excellent) and that's about what you might pay at a retail shop or at a guitar show. Two reasons vintage electric Epis go for low prices are: 1. Laminate rather than solid woods and 2: the way Gibson positioned the brand as second class citizen early on. With vintage Epis every bit as high quality as laminate Gibson electrics of this period, they are a great value for the price. Perhaps some day, they will be back in vogue and my collection of vintage epis (my "401K guitars"/ LOL) will see an uptick in value.

I Have a 1955 Epiphone Century! I bought it second hand in 1977. I still use it today, it has an absolutely fabulous sound. I was also wondering what it is worth. I have not been able to find one made in 1955.I had read that between 1954 & 1958 very few if any Epiphones were manufactured. Gibson took over in 1958 and they dowgraded them. The Serial no. on my Guitar is 68541 and it was made in New York!!

I have one of these that my father owned, unfortunately I did not get his talent. Was wondering what the value of one of these would be.
