^That's called Economy picking and it's not what this is about, this is left hand modal exercises. Pick it whichever way feels more comfortable. Lots of people feel more comfortable doing straight up alternate picking on 3-note-per-string exercises than using economy picking.

I noticed when picking the G major scale (2:00-2:06)that you alternated.Wouldn't it be more efficeint to just use the same pick direction when changing strings? On E...d-u-d then use the momentum of the downstroke to start the three notes per string on the A sting. A...d-u-d rather than change pick directiion when crossing strings?
