on 06/29/2010 		Arji, you make a valid point that tone does start with the player and how they play the instrument. But I have found with my experience over the years, good tone is found by playing with the dials not by the numbers but by your ear. So many people I know set dials based on the numbers and not the actual sound.

on 06/12/2010 		Great tone comes from the player not the gear. Someone who doesn't have the touch can spend all the money in the world and still sound mediocre. This is also true with acoustic guitar. Gear just enhances the player's touch and style. For great tone it takes a combination of three things: Quality Guitar Quality Amp Quality Player But often a quality player can overcome the first two.

on 06/11/2010 		Here's something I finally figured out a while ago: " he was using an American Strat through a 1970 JCM800 with a birch 4x12 Boogie cabinet with Celestion Vintage 30's and a modded Tube Screamer with an original germania chip,a BBE modded overdrive and a 1969 Vox wah-wah and it sounded unreal; I bought the same setup and I don't sound like that no matter what I try! Huh? What rack? What effects loop? Whadaya mean his tech was triggering unseen pedals except the BBE and wah-wah? ...oh.

on 06/06/2010 		On the Experience Hendrix DVD (which was the previous year) the best tone, IMO, was coming from Buddy Guy. Probably a Strat straight into a reissue Twin. Fantastic dynamics, perfect bends, etc. Andy Aledort was playing with him and looked on the spot during the inevitable lick trading. I wouldn't want to be on stage with Mr. Guy with a guitar in my hand. Living Color were pretty amazing as well. Check it out.

on 06/05/2010 		Right on, Brooks - and we'll throw in the Brooklyn Bridge for $89.95 - seriously, folks - these stories and "coverage" are never about the playing, about the notes - about the music - they're about gear - like fast food advertisements - roping you in. You want tone - listen to Buddy Miller's Diavolo's with trem - killer PLAYING...

on 06/05/2010 		It's pathetic the way people rave about tone but never discuss the notes themselves. Searching for the ideal tone is a waste of time because each song may require a different approach. I love a great tone as much as the next guy but seriously, it's the notes which make up the music and not how'nice' the amp/guitar combo sounds! Each guitar player would have a natural inclination to a certain tonal flavour (I know I do) and that would be enough to find a sound that identifies you but ultimately there's the music.
