When Dethklok opened for Mastodon in late 2009, Small’s effects setup included a Boss GE-7 Graphic EQ, MXR Phase 90 to sharpen his live sound, a DigiTech Whammy, and Dunlop Dimebag Darrell Cry Baby from Hell wah. He explains his minimal use of effects, saying, “When you have crazy fast runs and another guitarist that you’re playing with, you pretty much have to just lock in and make sure your sounds are matching.” He uses a Rivera RM-1 footswitcher to engage preset pedal loops, which also emplys MIDI switching to control the Whammy.
