Rig Rundown: Yngwie Malmsteen

Rebecca Dirks

The man himself shows us his wall of amps, cream-colored Strats, and minimal effects in this larger-than-life Rig Rundown.

Premier Guitar December 2011

We recently caught up with the legendary shredder, Yngwie J. Malmsteen on his 2011 Relentless tour. Watch Yngwie walk us through his rig in our Rig Rundown:

Guitars
Ygnwie uses his Yngwie Malmsteen Signature Strats with a large headstock, Seymour Duncan YJM Fury pickups, scalloped fretboard with Dunlop frets, brass nut, standard tremolo, and 250K YJM pots, as well as one more important detail: "You have to have the Ferrari sticker on the back, otherwise it won't work." He tunes one Strat down, and uses a red version for the song, "Red Devil." The guitars are strung with Fender .008 - .048 strings.

For acoustic songs, Malmsteen uses his well-worn nylon-string Ovation Viper customized with different soundholes and large frets.

Amps
Yngwie's legendary wall of Marshalls features 36 heads and 22 cabinets. The wall is composed of vintage Marshall heads and cabinets, but his live amps and cabs are from his new Marshall YJM series. The YJM100 cabinets are loaded with Celestion 75-watt speakers. He runs one of his YJM heads at 50 watts and one at 100 watts. Though the amp has attenuation, noise gate, overdrive, and digital reverb, Malmsteen says he doesn't use those features live.

Effects
For pedals, Malmsteen uses a Boss NS-2 Noise Supressor and a Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble for clean sounds.

He also uses a vintage Roland Analog Echo, "to make noise," a Cry Baby wah, Taurus bass pedals (not pictured), and a DOD Yngwie Malmsteen YJM308 Preamp Overdrive.

He uses an RJM Mastermind MIDI Foot Controller to split the signal for stereo sound and to control the effects. The Fuzz Face to the left of the controller is not in use, he says, he just likes the way it looks ("like a landmine.") His picks are 1.5mm Dunlop.

I really dont get all the hate. Yngwie has done his own thing since he started in the early eighties, and I wouldnt put anyone in the same category as him. steve vai,joe satriani, john petrucci, michael angelo, all brilliant musicians. But its like comparing apples to oranges. I dont believe many people out there hold the credentials to take anything away from yngwie.he is quite simply a musical genious. He doesnt need youre approval. hell I love angus young but it aint the same ballpark. apples to oranges.

I'd say most people hate Malmsteen just because he knows he's good, not because he couldn't play "soulfully." Fundamentally, what Vai and Govan does on guitar is the same, and yet people like them better because they don't assert their superiority outright.

It's easy to explain why he has 5 guitars on the road: He plays with incredible energy and after 1 or 2 songs the guitar isn't tuned perfectly, then he switch to another Strat that is identical to the previous one, so it's like playing the same guitar all the time. I'd like to listen to one of those guys over here that criticize him, are you sure you can play at his level with only a strat, overdrive and Marshall??

Yngwie "Flaccid" Malmsteen makes some of the most useless, masturbatory fluff ever. What a shame that such a skilled guitarist makes such dull, cliched music. Boooooring... You guys actually still care about this sweep picking, egotistical turd?

i wish the actual reasons for 25 Marshall heads was explained, besides the stage look...It would've been informative how more than several amps can be used w/o a stereo effect or a splitter box. I remember being a local stage hand for VH in '94- he was endorsing Peavey 5150 heads at the time- We unloaded 10 stacks & 20 heads- all the power cords were cut. None of themwere being used...His mic'd set up was on stage left- two marshall heads & two cabs, and a couple fx pedals...it was very cool to see EVH go thru sound check. They only did one song, but he spent 15 minutes or so just tweaking. We sat there front row at 4pm, checkin that stuff out...
