The Guitarist's Guide to iPad Apps
The Guitarist's Guide to iPad Apps
Jim Dalrymple
An overview of Ampkit+, AmpliTube, Capo, TabToolkit, ChordMate, Logic's Guitar Recording Toolbox, Guitar Tuner, Guitarist's Reference, and Setlist
(1 of 10)
Remember keeping a cassette recorder nearby just in case you needed to record a new riff or idea? How things have changed. Now, you can plug your guitar into an iPad and use a variety of apps to search for tabs, get lessons, record, change amp and effect models, and still have the convenience of carrying it around with you.
The iPad has plenty of advantages versus the iPhone platform—chiefly, the larger screen size. Developers making apps for the iPad have a lot more real estate to work with and the good developers make the most of it, giving you a better overall experience.

Great roundup of guitar apps that demonstrates how the iPad is putting untold power and creative flexibility into the hands of guitarists for a nominal cost. It opens up extraordinary new possibilities, almost too many of them, to choose from. The thing is to just have fun with it. The tricky part is, as mentioned in the piece, is playing guitar and "producing" on the iPad at the same time. I'm using a new thigh-mounted music stand that puts your tablet PC right there on your knee, within a finger's reach. Much smaller and way more convenient than using a clunky conventional music stand. The website is http://thipad.com Thanks for researching all these apps.

Check our new app for guitar chord charts creation - The Chord App. It allows you to build, save, edit, load custom chord charts/lists directly on your iPad. I've worked with a professional guitarist, with over 45 years of experience, to gather up a great chord collection (1400+ chord positions), that grows with each update thanks to our users' input. Here's the link: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/the-chor d-app/id576026881?ls=1&mt=8 And here are a few promo codes for you guys: FNRKPA3LHA7M TYXK9EY9W7KN J7M3A7J3AEAL Please don't forget to review/rate it in the AppStore if you've got the promo... Thanks :) Serge - The Chord App

Something's missing here: the iPad has one input. If I'm playing live, where do I get an output to plug into the desk?

I use RockProdigy. They have cool lessons and the song transcriptions are really accurate. It's the best that I found so far to work on my timing :)

I'm leaning towards getting amplitude with the Irig Stomp so I can change in songs from my amp to the effect or sound I have on the iPad. I need the foot pedal part (I'm a guitarist vocalist and can't afford to have to use my hands to change settings in the middle of a song. But Lilguitar has me considering the armpit app instead. Does anyone know if I can get a foot switch for this? I really just want the effects like DD, chorus, compressor, phaser, flanger etc. I would play this through my Peavey valve amp and cabinet.

There is an app/book out for an ipad/iphone that teaches kids how to play guitar. It is called Kasey's Guitar Jams for Kids. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kaseys- guitar-jams-for-kids/id511771442?mt=8 Pr omo video-http://youtu.be/XFEI44DYr_I

Addendum to previous comment: I had problems with irig et all. I bought the Apogee Jam and haven't had a noise problem since.
