Any gear geek attending a Wilco show recently has probably noticed guitar wizard Nels Cline playing through a mysterious red amp head. Cline’s amp is a prototype handbuilt by gear guru Tim Schroeder, who also tackles the formidable task of maintaining Wilco’s enviably overflowing stable of gear. (Full disclosure: Schroeder also writes a regular Tech Tips column at premierguitar.com.) Not long ago, Schroeder visited the band in their rehearsal loft to look over their road gear before a tour. He brought a new amp he’d built and solicited the band’s opinion. Cline—who’s known to prefer relatively clean, medium-wattage amps like the Jess Oliver and Marshall JTM45 he’s used in recent years—plugged in and was so smitten he bought the amp on the spot.

Schroeder used Cline’s input to design and build the DB7—a 6L6-driven, 45-watt, amp similar to Cline’s original—which is graced with elegant operational simplicity and tons of headroom. We checked it out and, like Cline, were blown away.

Top-Notch Build, Streamlined Features
The DB7 head is handbuilt from stem to stern using point-to-point wiring and a thick-gauge aluminum chassis. The first gain stage is driven with a 6SC7 tube—a variety that’s not common on modern amps, but which powered early versions of the Fender Super and Deluxe. There’s also a pair of 12AX7s in the preamp section.

The front panel of the DB7 is refreshingly simple. The single-channel head sports one 1/4" input and Volume, Treble, Middle, Bass, and Presence controls. A footswitchable boost control adds a little midrange for soloing, and a 3-way bright switch offers flat, bright, and hyper-bright modes. (The latter is designed for situations where a guitar requires extreme high end to assert itself in a busy mix.) The rear panel is equally streamlined, housing just a power-cord jack and 1/4" outs for 4-, 8-, and 16-Ω speakers.

Nice review! Not a lot online about this amp - how quickly does the volume ramp up, it is progressive, or is it LOUD from just off idle? I'm interested in getting one but it seems like maybe it's more appropriate for bigger gigs than home playing or small rooms.

Hello Tim and all at Schroeder Audio. I wanted to write to praise your amazing work. I have had the DB7 and Sidecar for nearly four months now, if I recall correctly. In that time, having used it in several settings for several styles, I must say that I have never heard a more incredible piece of musical equipment. The first time I looked over the amp, then turned it on, I was struck by the perfect craftsmanship. Then, quickly, how impossible it was to not find a sweet spot - at any setting. With a vast array of both big-name and boutique gear options available on the market to musicians searching for the best way to hear and present their own unique sound, the DB7 delivers exactly that. It is inspiring, to say the least. I always look forward to plugging in, if only for a few minutes or to play for several hours, and find the new surprises that the amp has to offer. As was promised (when speaking directly to the builder himself - imagine that nowadays!), it does not force a sound on the player as many amps can do, but allows one's own voice and style to shine through. I could not possibly ask for more. Many thanks, best wishes, and much respect. Timo

Truly one of a kind amp! I stopped by Tim's shop on a recent trip to Chicago and after playing all kinds of boutique amps next door at Maken Music, this Schroeder simply was on another level. Money is down for one of my own. Thanks for the hospitality, Tim!

I just put my down payment on the Surf Green amp and can't wait until this six week back order has passed. I normally don't get excited about much in life but it's almost like a kid waking up christmas morning anxiously waiting to open his gifts. I bought a guitar off Tim a year ago which they refer to as "The Shredder" and it has become my favorite axe to play. Plus my Guild X-170 had a fret job done which is Tim's specialty. It's like what can't this guy do? When i get enough money saved up Im gonna probably buy the three effects pedals as well. Now all Tim needs to get is a Schroeders Audio charge card for people like myself.

Amazing amplifier! The inside is just as beautiful as the outside. Tim was nice enough to show me. The quality is truly unmatched.

Amp is BETTER than the article can possibly describe. Unbelievers will be transformed immediately upon hearing it in person. Get some cab fare and get to Schroeder Audio on Hubbard in Chicago to hear for yourself. Until you do, don't make meritless comments.

Joe, this comment has absolutely no basis. Adam had no relationship with Tim prior to the review. While Tim writes for Premier Guitar (as do Jol Dantzig, Bob Taylor, and many other gear makers), our columnists don't have any association with our reviewers. In fact, it's likely that Adam did not know that Tim writes for PG, the disclosure was an editorial addition.

I played through this amp over the weekend and WOW! I can't get the tone out of my head. Simply amazing.
