GALLERY: Guitar Heroes – Legendary Craftsmen from
D’Angelico New Yorkers, 1958 and 1959
These late-fifties New Yorker model archtops feature an Art Deco rendering of the New Yorker hotel on the headstocks and a truss rod cover also mimicking the design. Key features of the New Yorkers include a stair step brass tailpiece, celluloid pickguard, black-white-black binding, and Grover Imperial Tuners. Guitarists as varied as George Benson (who owned the guitar on the left) and Pete Townshend have used the iconic D’Angelico New Yorker. Benson’s guitar was outfitted with a Gibson Johnny Smith pickup in the neck in the ’70s, and has been restored by John Monteleone.
