The Deftones are a hybrid. Always mutating. Always growing. They started out mixing heavy metal aggression from Stephen Carpenter’s crunchy, down-tuned, 7-string guitars with vocalist Chino Moreno’s gutturally charismatic hip-hop-style vocals. Over time, the group channeled Depeche Mode with atmospheric synth pop heard on White Pony’s “Teenager,” and an eerie Cure-ish meloncholy in Deftones’ “Minerva.” Seven albums in, the mixing and mashing continues on Koi No Yokan.

A distorted guitar riff gallops in “Poltergeist” and blooms in its verses with Moreno’s breathy lyrics. Another intensity-driven chorus-bloomer is the bombastic attack-and-release “Leathers.” New facets include hypnotic Jerry Cantrell-style deep string bends in the grooving “Tempest” and the brutal Soundgarden-meets-Quicksand tonal aggressions from bassist Sergio Vega in “Swerve City” and “Rosemary.”

The Deftones still represent what was great about the post-grunge, pre-boy-band ’90s. Further chiseling their musical melting-pot legacy, Koi No Yokan will be in heavy rotation alongside White Pony, Around the Fur, and Adrenaline for years to come. —Chris Kies

i think i can help... 6 string standard on adrenaline, 6 string drop d on ATF, 6 string drop d flat on white pony, 7 string (standard i think) on s/t, and 8 string (c standard i think) for diamond eyes and koi no yokan... what might confuse people is that ZOMG(!) he can play all the pre diamond eyes songs on his 8 string

Maybe I can help fix this confusion about his guitarzz... 6 string standard on adrenaline, 6 string drop d on around the fur, 6 string drop d flat on white pony, and i don't know the tunings for the rest but s/t he had a 7 string (i saw them tour in support of that album), and after that he went all 8 string (c standard tuning i think)... what might confuse people is that ZOMG(!) he can still play all the pre diamond eyes songs on his 8 string

ATF is in entirely C flat. I feel like their weakest 2 records in the catalog at this point are Adrenaline and S/T The last 3 have been money!

This album's gonna be awesome, the guys are in good form lately. Refreshed, happy in life appreciative of what they do. Chi's accident shock them up as i'm sure it would anyone in that situation. I get the feeling it opened their eyes to how short life is & how lucky they are to be who they are & it's showing in their music.
I hope people support the band & purchase the album & not just download it for free.
