Requisite anti-detractor post: Just because other great guitarists only used six doesn't mean that eight+ is bad. That is a logical fallacy. The right number of strings to play on is the amount you need to get the sounds you want. They got the sounds they wanted on six, because the sounds they wanted were possible on six...perhaps, indeed, they were thinking too narrow-mindedly, focusing only on what the instrument in their hands was capable of. There is nothing wrong with that, it is human nature. There are, however, a lot of truly amazing guitar players who play on seven or more strings, for example, Tosin Abasi. There are certain timbres you can acquire on a seven, eight, or nine string that you cannot anywhere else. The music you make should not be based entirely upon what your instrument is capable of (or what you perceive it to be capable of). If I can get the sound I want on four strings, I will play a four-stringed bass. If I can't get the sound I want on four strings, I would play a five-string, or maybe six. I own a seven-string guitar, since I couldn't get the sounds I wanted on six. Saying that sounds are "bad" because they don't fit your idea of what an instrument should be is putting yourself in a box. Innovation is what keeps music alive. I would hope nobody here is the sort to cling to the past and refuse anything new that comes along simply because it doesn't fit the "musical mold" that they've established, regarding what is "acceptable". There shouldn't be a mold to begin with.
