Carvin Announces the New Steve Vai Legacy III Amp

Carvin’s new Legacy III combines the best aspects of the Legacy I and Legacy II, in a compact chassis that’s lightweight and easily transportable.

San Diego, CA (Jan 20, 2012) -- Carvin announces the newest entry in the venerable Steve Vai Legacy Amplifier Series, the Legacy III Amp.

Carvin’s new Legacy III combines the best aspects of the Legacy I and Legacy II, in a compact chassis that’s lightweight and easily transportable. The 100W, all-tube Legacy III incorporates the original circuitry of the Legacy I on channels 1 & 2, and channel 3 is identical to channel 2, functioning as a second lead channel with a high gain switch. A master volume knob controls the volume of all 3 channels without affecting preamp gain settings. Other new features of the Legacy III include a variable, footswitch controlled master boost; variable, channel-assignable reverb; and internal LED lighting which can have different colors assigned to each channel. As on the Legacy II, the Legacy III features a MIDI input/through connector, compatible with any standard MIDI controller. An RMS power switch adjusts the output from 100W to 50W or 15W, which facilitates the overdriven tone many players look for at lower volumes. EL34 tubes produce smooth distortion, responsive sound and excellent reliability. The rear bias switch allows installation of 5881 (6L6GC) if desired. Other features, including a speaker impedance switch, effects loop, post master and new pre master loops, standby switch, presence control and treble/mid/bass controls allow the ultimate in flexibility. The Legacy III head is also rack-mountable with optional brackets.

I've had this amp for a month, ran great out of the box and you're right it is a little dark but it's got great crunch if you spoil it up. The problem is that the third OD chan just crapped out. Swapped all of the tubes no luv, going to take it to a amp guru in town as I'm in Vancouver CA. and do not want to take the shipping hit.To bad these guys don't have support out of country. I'll post the prblem when it's fixed... hope it's just a cheap offshore diod

i bought one of these and recieved it today. You guys all had vallad things to say. I to was under the impression when he was doing the demo for this. It was just him the head and the jem. Well what was that flashing underneath while he did the demo. I like the head even at 15 watts played threw marshalls 1960a and b cabs i;m glad i still ran my effects pedal threw the effects loop. Chanel one was great two and three were exactly as others said dark almost muddy until you turn up the presense and the treble all the way. I got the footswitch also. You get what you pay for. Carvin should just stick to guitars this is the second amp i got burned thinking it was going to be all that. Its definitely usable and each type guitar reacts differently pending on the pickups your using.Give me a month then i;ll update my review once i take this to the limit.Truely when you think of where the guitar and amp market are going soon you won;t be able to get anything for under a grand. I have to admit it does have some pretty good sounds. The clean is very usable and sounds good as a crunch with a TS pedal. I did send it back though. The amp is very dark and I have a problem with any amp that requires me to set one or more of the tone controls at there max. I had to set the treble and the presence on 9 in order to use it...

Got it yesterday. Looks like a picnic basket. Has many great features but its very dark sounding. I'm not sure if I can use it. I have the treble and the presence up all the way and its still dark. I guess the real problem is I'm comparing it to my Soldano....

I am impressed with the feature set and the small form-factor and weight and will be saving for one. I don't see aesthetics being a big issue with amps - to me, they should be heard and hardly seen. If you want something aesthetically pleasing from Carvin, make it a guitar - they do fabulous work - they did this for me... http://www.chromecity.com/Images/Jeff_Ca rvin_2.jpg

They should have made it rack-mountable...

Dave, you're totally right that the features on this amp are killer. It just looks like it was made at Home Depot to me. I don't care for the aesthetics, but the features do look nice.

If the Legacy tone is to your liking, I would go with this model over the previous ones. The RMS power switching would be great to play in the amp's "sweet spot" without pissing off the soundman. Multiple loops, biasing options, etc. are very relevant to your tone and shouldn't be overlooked.
