Dr. Z Releases Maz 8 Amp

The Maz 8 is a full featured 8-watt amp that is designed to give you an incredible range of shimmering cleans to full-on rock action at reasonable volume levels.

Cleveland, OH (October 17, 2011) -- Based on the modern day classic Maz 18 platform, the Maz 8 is a full featured 8-watt amp that is designed to give you an incredible range of shimmering cleans to full-on rock action at reasonable volume levels.

The single EL84 output section can be run in Pentode or Triode mode. In Pentode mode you get the sonic signature of the Maz 18. Dr. Z says the pentode setting gives you plenty of dynamic range for clean country picking to grinding riff rock bliss that can be taken a step further with footswitchable EQ bypass function that gives you a gain boost. The Maz 8 takes on a much different dialect in triode mode with more of a vintage feel and sound. In triode, the volume level drops back and the tone fattens up. Dr. Z says kicking on the EQ bypass in triode mode is well-voiced for slide guitar.

The front panel features Volume, Treble, Middle, Bass, Reverb, Master, and Cut, which is described as a Tone control for the output section. The back panel features a 4, 8, and 16 ohm speaker out. An effects loop and EQ bypass are standard. The back panel also has the pentode/triode switch. The Maz 8 is available as a head, 2x10, and 1x12 combo. The 1x12 comes standard with a Celestion Blue speaker, and is available in a new smaller 1x12 Studio combo cab or the standard size 1x12.

MRROCKYZBLUE said "Spanky: Isn't the Modern Rock sound mostly hiding behind multiple effects and a cheesy wall of fizzy distortion? " No. Any other wrong assumptions? Name some high end modern rock players then show me their effects...I've not found one that is hiding behind cheesy effects. You have a record deal?

I've been using this little baby for some gigs, and while I like it with boost and some drive pedals, I prefer the sound of the power tube doing it's natural thing without. I have to use the guitar volume more which is a good thing. I'm loving it! If you're used to using a drive pedals with higher powered amps you'll need to figure out how to use it with a single ended amp like this. You'll use different settings, but you won't need the pedals as much as the amp will easily get you there on it's own.

Spanky: Isn't the Modern Rock sound mostly hiding behind multiple effects and a cheesy wall of fizzy distortion? Where classic Rock is OVERDRIVE: Different era . Some Modern Rock players might be really good players, but you can't tell because of the over saturation of exotic effects. This is just a point of fact. :)

to maddog lee: its not about ability, else everyone in the industry would play one amp, right? You've got 1000's of well known signed, highly recorded guitar players that do not play Dr. Z. Your analogy doesn't hold water. The discussion was about what Dr.Z amps are good at, ability aside. Tone is what we are discussing. And those are not priced way below comparable boutique amps. There are some mighty fine boutique amps in the same price range. You can speak with most boutique owners if you call; spoke to Jeff Bober just this week. Sorry, but if you are looking a versatile amp that covers things like modern rock, Dr Z amps are not the 'go to' amps. Doesn't matter if they are built like a tank or not. I have a Maz 18 head and Z cab for sale right now on craigslist. Taking a beating on the resale price too.

Well, to put the Buddy Whittington issue to rest, in John Mayall's words, “...he's (BW) ...the greatest Bluesbreaker of them all.” And I think Mr. Mayall knows what he's talking about. Dr.Z Amps???? If you're a decent guitar player, you'll sound great on a Z amp. If you suck, his amps won't give you a cheesy wall of fizzy distortion to hide behind like some other booteek builders do. So, if you can play, get a Z. If not, use the money to get lessons, then later, go buy a Z. Z's are very touch sensitive and dynamic. and yadda, yadda, I've owned all the other good ones too....big deal. Doc's amps are Toneful and built like a tank....and priced way below comparable boutique amps..... About the Doc himself? You can get a hold of him and his staff for any questions any day....there's a great website built around his wonderful amps and his superb customer service......go check out http://ztalk.proboards.com

I'd say its a stretch for modern rock. ANY amp can be made to do it, but I have the Maz 38 as I mentioned in an earlier post and it does not cover modern rock without pedals. The modern rock formula of extreme clean into heavy gain and back is not what Dr. Z is all about. They are not marketed or sold as versatile amps; those would be 2-3 channel amps. I sold my Dr. Z and bought a Bogner 20th Anniversary Shiva and never looked back. All matter of choice of course, but it covers modern rock leaps and bounds beyond the Max 38 playing live, song to song and in versatility. To me using a Dr. Z then buying a distortion pedal is a waste of tone.

Don't quote me, but, I think it was Myles that once said of a person "commenting" on some equipment, "When Carl V played that gear it sounded great, is it possible it's you?" Will own a 8 soon. Keep em coming Doc.
