Electro-Harmonix Introduces 22 Caliber Power Amp

Premier Guitar

The 22 Caliber is a 22-watt, Class D power amp in the shape of a pedal

Long Island, NY (June 30, 2009) -- Electro-Harmonix has announced the 22 Caliber, a 22-watt, Class D power amp with a pedal-size footprint. The 22 Caliber is designed to power 4-, 8- or 16-ohm speaker loads without adjustment. The pedal features a volume knob that controls the amp's natural overdrive, similar to a vintage amp with single volume control, and a bright switch that adds presence and definition.

Electro-Harmonix has posted a video of EHX engineer John Pisani demonstrating the power amp through a 1x12 speaker cabinet and Big Muff Pi on their website.

Remarkable! Clear and loud, especially if the right preamp is used. Sounds different with every speaker so the right match is important for your ear. Even worked well for my bass player running into a 100W, 15" bass cabinet with an effects box in front.

Bass version? It is a POWER amp, not a full amplifier. Any preamp device or pedal can be plugged in front of it. Use an eq pedal in line if tone controls are a concern.

Mesa Boogie hasn't produced a product with the 22 caliber name in years so why is that a problem?

Awesome idea! How 'bout a 50 or 100 watt model even if it needs a little bigger box? 22 watts has never been enough for me.

I have to try it with my bass. Maybe it's good for rehersals...

One application would be to build a small lightweight cab with a single superb speaker. It should easily weigh well under 20 lbs. If this pedal/amp sounds good, you'd have a terrific super-lightweight rig. Too bad about the lack of tone controls though.

I have a Tonesonics Tonewedge cab that sits on the floor in front of me, I can't amagine how cool it would be to have the amp on my pedalboard!

Okay, great idea, but where's the bass, mid, and treble controls we'll all need? Add those, and I'll buy a few.

I don't know how it will sound, but as long as it's not holy-stain-awful, this should replace the crate powerblock as the most convenient backup amp available.

I'm having a hard time seeing the value in this little class D 'digital' amp. Since I still gotta have a cab i'd rather just carry a small combo, uhh, say, like a boogie.
