Scottsdale, AZ (Aug. 28, 2008) — For nearly twenty years Fender and modern blues sensation Kenny Wayne Shepherd have shared a stage and they are now officially announcing the September 2008 release of his new signature model, the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Stratocaster guitar.

A sleekly elegant addition to Fender’s stable of artist Strat models, the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Stratocaster is based on Shepherd’s own ’61 instrument (which will soon be on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum) and welds vintage style to modern features. Most distinctively, Shepherd’s new signature model boasts a blueswailing voice of its own thanks to its three custom-voiced Kenny Wayne Shepherd pickups.

Other features include an alder-body, maple neck with 12”-radius rosewood fingerboard and 21 jumbo frets, vintage-style synchronized tremolo bridge with Graph Tech saddles and Fender vintage-style tuning machines. The guitar comes in three polyester finishes — a Black model with a three-ply black-white-black pickguard and racing stripe body graphic, and Three-color Sunburst and Arctic White models that each have a three-ply mint green pickguard (with cross graphic on the Arctic White model).

“It’s an honor to be a part of the Signature Series guitar line. My goal throughout the design process was to combine top notch quality with unique appearances and road proven components at an affordable price," said Shepherd. "These guitars will help a new generation of guitarists develop their own signature sound the way Fender has helped me to develop mine."

The Louisiana-born Shepherd began recording his first album at age 16 and became a blues/rock sensation. He has sold millions of albums worldwide, including the platinum selling Ledbetter Heights (1995), the Grammy-nominated and platinum selling Trouble Is … (1998), Grammy nominated Live On (1999), The Place You’re In (2004) and two time Grammy nominated 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads (2007). Shepherd has four number-one blues albums to his credit, including Billboard Magazine’s # 1 Blues Album of 2007, a string of number-one mainstream rock singles, two Billboard Music Awards (1998’s Rock Song of the Year and Blues Album of the Year), two Orville H. Gibson Awards, the Blues Foundation’s Keeping The Blues Alive Award, and a Blues Music Award.

“In addition to his unique voice, unbelievable abilities and general fingerboard prowess, Kenny is one of the modern-day ambassadors for a true American art form—the blues,” said Justin Norvell, Fender’s marketing director for electric guitars. “His Grammy-nominated 10 Days Out showcased a mutual respect that crosses generations. He is the real deal, and he has the entire package.”

I've actually played all three of these (they were Kenny's), and I was impressed. Kenny had Fender wind the pick-ups several times to get the right tone--and they are unique to his models. He spent a lot of time at Fender getting that combination just right.

The 12-inch radius is so the strings won't fret out when Kenny bends the string up as far as a perfect fifth. That was really important for him with the heavy string gauge he uses and the low action. Kenny uses all three on stage most nights, and has pretty much retired his "expensive" guitars in favor of his Signature series. He still plays that Hendrix re-issue (with all the painted junk on it) on his Hendrix tunes. The ones that Kenny plays on stage are not special, except that they've been set up to his liking. All Kenny's guitars were made in Mexico, and are identical to the ones you'll be able to buy.

It was important to Kenny that his signature model be affordable to his fans, and not be some high-end, snobby collector deal. They really were meant to be played, and played hard. The street price ought to shake out around $600, so they are really affordable.

I've got a Sunburst one on order, but I may get the entire set.

Is this an omen marking the end of the Relic craze? Remember that KWS was one of the first Fender relic players.

A 60's vintage style strat sounds good to me. For all of the boneheads who have a signature guitar it is nice to know that a true player has his own signature guitar now. I saw Kenny with B.B. King back in the day when Kenny was just starting out and man, oh man, could that kid play!! Every note made sense and his tone was massive. I'll bet the pickups in this guitar are hot and the price is affordable for us average Americans who can't fork out $2,000 for a guitar. I think this will be a great guitar and a big seller for Fender. Kudos to Kenny and Fender on what looks like a great addition to the family!

I agree with the loud mouth "know it all's" on this forum.Mike practice what you preach! You are one of the biggest ones haha. What do you know or think you know about music anyway?Just ignore Mike.Check out this guitar and don't let some loud mouth stop you from checking and buying this guitar.

Mike you have no idea what talent is or you wouldn't run your mouth! You more likely than not play a Daisy Guitar! This guitar is worth checking out because of the specs alone.I wouldn't knock any guitar without picking it up and trying it out first.Fender has a great rep and fine guitars and my main ax is a mex strat.I don't know if I'll pay the money asked for a mex strat though,I can but an American strat for that price.

I love to watch these loud mouth "know-it-all's" plug a guitar like this straight into a clean amp, with NO effects, and then make excuses why it isnt up to parr...haha! (Couldnt be the fact that they dont know shit about playing right???)
This guitar gives you all you need to re-create the sound of the early ones, (and I have a few of them). You're some little punk who should get smashed in the teeth with one of the guitars you cant play! Nuff Said....
This guitar is a good representation of a strat. It WONT play itself, (as all to many of these kids bitch about).
Just think.....This guitar has, IS, and will continue to make musical history! Where was all your custom botique shit back then???

HEY PHIL, BACK OFF MAN !!! WHAT'S A MATTER WITH MADE IN MEXICO ?!?!?!? THEY'RE GREAT GUITARS...YOU EVER PLAY ONE ?!?!?! AND WHY THE 12" RADIUS...WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH THE VINTAGE 7.5"...NOT MAN ENOUGH FOR YOU, I GUESS ?!?!? WHY DON'T YOU GO PLAY A GIRLY GUITAR THEN LIKE A SUHR OR ANDERSON AND LEAVE THE REAL MEN TO OUR FENDERS !!!!! YOU PROBABLY HATE RELIC FINISHES AND SINGLE COIL PICKUPS THAT HAVE 60 CYCLE HUM, TOO.

Fender should make more Strats with a 12" radius fretboard. It looks like it's gonna be a made-in-Mexico strat. Too bad, I'd have prefered an American made guitar for the better workmanship and better materials. Also, a polyurethane finish or even a nitro finish would have been nicer. This Kenny Wayne model is too similar to the classic Player '60's Strat. But hey, we'll see. I'd like to try one out myslef.
