Fender Custom Shop Announces David Gilmour Strat

Premier Guitar

After years of anticipation, the David Gilmour Strat will officially hit stores on September 22

Scottsdale, Arizona (July 29, 2008) -- David Gilmour and the Fender Custom Shop are extremely proud to announce the highly anticipated release of one of the most iconic musical instruments of the past 50 years -- the David Gilmour Signature Series Stratocaster guitar. Based on Gilmour’s famous “Black Strat” guitar, the instrument will be available at select Fender retailers worldwide beginning Sept. 22, 2008.

A cornerstone of Pink Floyd’s incomparably revolutionary sound, Gilmour’s Black Strat is featured extensively on The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and his critically acclaimed 2006 solo effort, On An Island. The Fender Custom Shop worked hand-in-hand with Gilmour and his longtime guitar technician, Phil Taylor, to create this signature model, a detailed reproduction of the Black Strat -- complete in its unmistakable look, sound and feel.

Gilmour bought the original instrument in May 1970 from Manny’s Music in New York. The guitar’s first Pink Floyd recorded appearance came on the group’s fifth album, Atom Heart Mother. It subsequently became Gilmour’s main guitar for live performances and studio work.

The new reproduction -- the David Gilmour Signature Series Stratocaster guitar -- features an alder body, black over three-color sunburst finish, a black pickguard, a one-piece straight-grain maple neck, custom pickups and Gilmour’s now-infamous electronics and shortened vintage tremolo arm. Beautiful, powerful, unique and as idiosyncratic as Gilmour’s playing, the guitar will be produced by the Fender Custom Shop in N.O.S. (new old stock) and Relic versions.

The David Gilmour Signature Series Stratocaster guitar comes with a custom case, an Evidence high-end guitar cable, Gilmour’s three-disc Live in Gdansk CD/DVD set and Taylor’s 2007 book about the guitar’s history, The Black Strat. The first 500 guitars sold in either finish option will include a limited edition, signed copy of The Black Strat book, autographed by Phil Taylor.

I just bought a relic custom shop DG Strat..I bought this guitar because i now can afford it and I always wanted to know what the guitar would be like to play. Its a cool feeling looking down and actually seeing what dave see's night after night. Plus I've earned it...i've been playing for 25 years and I'm good enough to actually deseve one I think. Its more of a collector thing for me to pay respect to the great David Gilmour. If any guitar makes you want to pick it up and just play...thats great..this one does that for me.Chech out my vids on youtube..search "jashobbsie" or jason hobbs.

cheers to all!
and yes tone is really in ones fingers partly....equipment helps refine it it!

Hey, Just found this thread by chance while doing some research for buying another strat on ebay. I am a huge Gilmour fan and yes if you are also, you have found a way to get the tone. I have seen the Floyd live many times from 74 on and the last time in 92 the Divison Bell tour. If I could afford one of these, I would buy one. The guitar I am looking at on ebay has EMG picups so it has the fat bridge tone. I would like to see Mr. Gilmour in a small live setting to really hear the tone we hear recorded. From where I was seated on the floor up front on the 92 tour(Vancouver, BC)I could not really say that the tone was there. Check out Gilmourish.org a great site! Now back to my bidding...I might just buy that black MIJ 95 strat, just needs a black pick guard to go with the white EMG's.

Through twist of fate more than any attempt to copy Dave Gilmour's strat, I ended up with a Jap strat body with 3 EMG's an EXG and SPC and a beautiful Warmoth neck with Jumbo frets and Sperzels tuners. It's far better and cheaper to do this than to buy some faked copy. In all it probably cost me about £800, in around 1991 but it's a real guitar.

I love DG's sound and look but this is crazy! I have built one using the same pickups and switch that turns on the neck pickup in any position. I also have a custom Warmoth 21 fret Neck. These are guitars are for posers that have no guitar building skills

if your a lawyer you really need to break open the dictionary and learn to spell the word T A L E N T. As for the Gilmour strat.. yeah bring it on, i already have my own hand crafted black strat which i shall enjoy for many years. quality will always cost more which ever corner you turn. ford fiesta or masarati?

It looks like a reasonable guitar, but who actually buys the relics? You can buy, modfy and relic any old strat. It has got to be more fun and satisfying to knock up your own version? I saw two guys on YouTube having great fun mimicing the Fender Custom shop by kicking a strat body roiund a car park. The results were not 100% authentic, but it was a reasonable attempt. Come on guys get out your sanders and hammers - come on customsie!!!

You know, I never met a lawyer who would take the time to BS about themselves the way I've seen here. They certainly don't go around telling others about how much money they have. This is a really sad thread and I can't believe it is even being posted. DG is awesome , it has nothing to do with his equipment, it's what is in his heart that shines through in his music.
