New York's Famed Knitting Factory Nightclub ready for Fender's Jazzmaster 50th Anniversary Concert

Scottsdale, AZ (July 15, 2008) -- To celebrate the rich five-decade legacy of the Jazzmaster guitar, Fender is hosting a 50th Anniversary Jazzmaster Concert on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at New York’s famous Knitting Factory nightclub. The event will feature performances by acclaimed Jazzmaster artists Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.), Nels Cline (Wilco), Tom Verlaine (Television) and other special guests.

The anniversary will also be celebrated with new and historic Fender guitar displays, graphics, videos and a Jazzmaster guitar giveaway. Fender’s 50th Anniversary Jazzmaster Concert is open to the public on a club-capacity basis; tickets are on sale now through the club’s website.

“This is an important event because the Jazzmaster has always lived in the looming shadows of the Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars,” said Justin Norvell, Fender marketing director for electric guitars. “But under the radar, it became an underground icon in its own right and more than worthy of its own time in the spotlight. The artists who played it then and play it now are some of the musical prime movers who’ve kept the guitar relevant and have pushed it forward sonically.”

Fender introduced the Jazzmaster guitar in 1958 as a high-end alternative to its omnipresent 1950s elder siblings, the Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars. Curvaceous, sleek and boasting an abundance of controls and chrome, the Jazzmaster became a hit with youthful players who were blazing new trails in surf and garage pop music. More than a decade later, the Jazzmaster was rediscovered by new generations of edgy new guitarists who loved its versatile sound and affordable price. The guitar continued to attract those who dared to be different; the boundary pushers and the up-and-coming fringe talent. A look at the instrument’s 50-year history shows that whenever rock music experiences major stylistic shifts, the Jazzmaster is always right there. The guitar remains a star instrument in the Fender galaxy, with three new models—the J Mascis Jazzmaster, the Elvis Costello Jazzmaster and the Classic Player Jazzmaster Special—introduced in 2007-2008.

New York’s Knitting Factory (located at 74 Leonard St.) is the perfect venue for this important musical occasion. The famous nightclub is a downtown music destination that pays tribute to the Jazzmaster guitar’s initial late-’50s jazz intentions, while it also provided a welcoming home to the experimental scene of the ’70 and ’80s that spawned great Jazzmaster-wielding groups such as Television and Sonic Youth.

Fuzz, rumble, shred .The terminology is consistent with a type of stylish but varied instrumental garage rock bent that has been called surf guitar, hot rod, biker rock and so on. Locked into a time (mostly the '60s) and place (usually California), the genre nevertheless has managed to have legs, fueling some two generations of music. It's widely accepted that the late Link Wray and the still shredding Dick Dale are the totems for this genre. There are bunches of other acts that made excellent instrumental music in the '60s, but perhaps none more important and underappreciated than Davie Allan, who plays the Continental Club on Saturday. According to Allan, it's his first Texas visit since he played a "Teenage Fair" here in August 1967.Allan first made an impression with his buzzsaw recordings that backed numerous biker films in the '60s. He was something of a secret transitional figure in the role of rock guitar — a distortion-heavy bridge from Wray to the psychedelic rock that would follow. His music carried on a rebellious tradition of instrumental rock but with a darker edge than surf rock generally had. (Long out of print, several of his titles were reissued a few years ago by Sundazed.)"As soon as you hear (him)," says Eddie Angel, guitarist in the modern surf-guitar band Los Straightjackets. "You know it's Davie Allan."Allan made some waves with a regional hit, Apache '65, before his work on Roger Corman's The Wild Angels made him the go-to guy to create music for low-budget biker films."I went for lots of low notes á la Duane Eddy, my first guitar idol," Allan says. "But I added the distortion and imagined what a motorcycle might sound like if it was a musical instrument. Davie Allan and the Arrows, who put Blue's Theme in the Top 40 in 1967, the band's only charting hit, and a song that marked a garage-rock evolution from surf to biker/hot rod.
Allan describes his early stuff as being "non-fuzz," closer to the surf style at the time. As the biker-movie fad

Re: Fender 50th Anniversary Jazzmasster Concert.
Folks, when we talk about Fender, we should never forget that we should not expect too much. The years of Leo were over A LONG TIME AGO. With his departure, also went the core enthusiasm and interest. Have any of you called Fender lately and attempted to take care of an issue related to your gear? From poor color selection to Asian/Mexican made products that are less than satisfactory. What next??
Let me get this straight...A surf guitar born in So Cal, where the "company" is based, celebrating it's birthday in New York City......Yep, it makes perfect sense to me, what else would you expect from Fender....and you ask what about DA (Davie Allan)??? Heck what about the Ventures??
Fender, worship the GUITARS (the American made preferably) and the folks in Corona who craft them, SHIT can the Fender management who continue to make the best guitars on the face of the earth look bad.

Although introduced with a different intent (jazz) the Jazzmaster is a SURF GUITAR. Period. Others have got the best out of it, and thats great. So, why would Fender or anyone else for that matter, pay tribute to the Jmaster any place other than the West Coast, Southern California to be exact? And where is the Anniversary model Jazzmaster at? Fender sure does pay tribute the their roots dont they.....

I was reading by the shine on the light night dial
about Fender guitars that were advertised
with every one of those custom made axes it just
started bringing tears to me eyes
I was seriously plunking about on my Jazzmaster
when the switch broke 'cause it's old
They're making things that I can hardly believe
I really think Fender's getting out of control.

Davie Allan is the sound salvation
his fuzz is rockin' up the nation
They say he can't get honored 'cause it ain't his season
But they don't give you any choice
'cause they think that it's treason.
So you had better live with what you're told.
play the Jazzmaster we've already sold!

I wanna bite the hand that builds them.
I wanna bite that hand so badly.
I want to make them wish they'd never seen me.

Some who work at Fender sit around every evening
and they worry about the economic times ahead
Their decisions are overwhelmed by indifference
and the promise of an early bed
I won't shut up until they cut out;
the templates for the Fuzzmaster.
It's only inches on the band saw jig.
And the Custom Shop has a lot of tools
that they can do it,we're all waiting on his rig!

Davie Allan's music from his Fender Jazzmaster is like stopping at a truck stop and it looks like a normal hot dog until you bite into it. Then there's a rumbling down inside that causes a gusher to expload forth and with sudden vicious velocity!Chunks and splatters of debris come flying out and no amount of air freshener can clear the atmosphere of the loudness that has transpired. This may be a crude example but it's not your daddy's surf music Jazzmaster. It's from the dark alley and painted black as girls walk by in their summer clothes. Fender must be scared!

Would it be appropriate to have that night a Davie Allan & The Arrows protest in his honor that Fender over looked him? Maybe Elvis Costello could show up and bite that hand for him! Fender needs to honor Davie Allan! The Jazzmaster Society!
