George Fullerton: March 7, 1923 – July 4, 2009

George Fullerton, long time business partner and creative collaborator of Leo Fender, passed away on Saturday morning of congestive heart failure. He was 86 years old.

Fullerton and Fender began their partnership in 1948, and worked together at the Fender factory in Orange County, CA until Fender sold the company to CBS in 1965. Fender was the innovator and inventor and Fullerton provided the technical know-how and problem-solving in the shop. He devised the unique tools that were used to create the revolutionary Broadcaster, Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars. Fullerton also sketched the designs of the guitars based on Fender’s ideas. Fender and Fullerton teamed up again at the Music Man amplifier factory, and then started G&L Guitars in 1980.

Fullerton is survived by his daughter, Diane, his son, Geoff, and two grandchildren.

Dear Diane and Geoff and grandchildren, your father and grandfather was a true renaissance man with his development of the solid-body electric guitar. He was a true visionary and his ideas were ahead of his time, he added so much to the possibilities of contemporary music. He provided the fertile ground to which musicians all over the world could plant their seeds, with limitless boundaries George Fullerton added so much to my life, I am for ever in awe and in debt. Rest in Peace.

George was a legend. He quietly worked at his craft and along with Leo made enduring guitars and amps that have lasted sixty years. He designed Leo’s gravestone and now he is reunited with Leo to make that beautiful music for eternity. God Bless…George! Go be with the Angels!

Back in the early 80s I bought a new guitar from Leo Fender's new company - G&L. It was a G200. I was used to having a whammy bar on my guitars, so since I lived in Orange County where they had their factory I decided to go there and see if I could talk to a tech about having one added. I walked into an unassuming office where there was only a young lady present. I asked her if I could talk with someone about adding the whammy bar and I showed her my guitar. She said, "one moment," and went back. A moment later she and another gentleman came back. He smiled and shook my hand and said, "Hi, I'm George, I'm the Vice President. Can I help you?" I explained my situation and he told me that they don't do that work at the factory there, but he gave me the home phone number of one of the techs that worked there and said he might want to do it as a side job. Wow! How many Vice Presidents would take time out to speak with the customer and assist him like that. That kind introduction and short conversation has stuck with me ever since. And I did contact the tech and he happily installed the whammy bar for $20.00, and did a great job to boot.

What an astonishing life! Designing and building, on the cutting edge, musical instruments that are still some of the most superior among any of todays' best. Fantastic Man. What an accomplishment.

George and Leo changed music as it was then known as well as my life. I have been playing guitar ever since 1964 and still love it. Godspeed

Thanks for everything George, my ASAT is still my "go to" guitar for sessions and live work nothing sounds quite as good!

The bi-cut neck never needs tweeking, the pickups are the best single coils I've ever used and the feel of the guitar in my hands is fabulous.

You and Leo set the standard and you'll be sorely missed!
