Gibson Announces Min-ETune Aftermarket Robot Tuning System

Min-ETune is a small, compact, battery-powered tuning unit that sits on the back of the headstock.

Nashville, TN (November 28, 2012) -- Five years after introducing the Robot Les Paul, Gibson has announced an add-on product to potentially add the technology to any guitar. It appears that the Min-ETune is currently only being offered as an upgrade to a wide range of Gibson's offerings, and not yet as a standalone product. Here's what Gibson has to say about the technology:

Min-ETune is a small compact battery powered tuning unit that sits on the back of the guitar — a mighty enhancement to an already great instrument. No need for screws, wiring or routing, in fact the system is hardly visible from the front of the guitar. You can still adjust the tuning pegs manually or turn on the Min-ETune to choose from 12 popular tunings or program 6 of your own.

A guitar with Min-ETune looks the same, feels the same, plays the same and rocks the same - it’s just always in tune. Adjust to other instruments' imperfect tuning with Reference Tuning and keep that harmony going. Perfect for home, studio and gigging: The internal lithium battery lasts for 80 to 100 tunings on just one charge. Rock longer with the fast and accurate Min-ETune, tuning your guitar in just 3 seconds and 1 strum.

I would be interested in getting this for one of my guitars. Can you buy these aftermarket and install them yourself?

Well the guitar in this demo is out of tune! When he strums the a-minor I can hear the high E-string is flat. Years of playing has trained me to be careful w/ the neck pickup of an LP, btw... seems more apt to reveal any tuning discrepancies...bad choice for a tuner demo. Give me the bridge pickup w/ a touch of chorus and I can get by.

This would be great to have on my Martin acoustic.

Nice product, but the price policy is absurd : 199 $ add-on on a new Gibson, 399 $ for a retrofit !! I would have considered the purchase at 199, but the retrofit price makes it absurd.

There must be more to this unit than the battery/tuner behind the headstock. I am guessing there is a piezo strip You put near the bridge. Something has to tell the battery/tuner what the strings frequencies are.

If you're using an electronic tuner you're not "learning to tune your guitar", you're just turning knobs. I agree that tuning by ear is helpful in training your ear, but the best way to get good at the guitar is playing. I think a lot more players would be able to explore new horizons if they could dial in an alternative tuning in a few seconds. It would also be nice to switch from standard tuning to an open tuning on stage in less time than it would take to switch guitars. I hate watching someone re-tune their guitar on stage during a performance, I hate it even more when they forget to cut the volume and I have to hear it as well!

Seems like overkill to play G, A, C and barred A in tune! Wonder how it works with heavy whammy bar use...I can picture the tuners spinning like a top trying to keep Jeff Beck in tune!

Let's hope "internal batter" doesn't translate to "will eventually crap out." Seems cool though, but can you get them six in line for a firebird?
