Grover Jackson Returns with GJ2 Guitars

The company’s first model, the Arete, will be on display at NAMM 2012.

Laguna Hills, CA – Grover Jackson, the luthier behind Jackson Guitars and Randy Rhoads’ famous Concordes, has launched a new guitar company called GJ2 Guitars. The company’s first model, the Arete, will be on display at NAMM 2012.

Arete 5-Star

After Jackson Guitars was sold to Fender, Jackson worked with a number of other manufacturers and operated his own contract manufacturing operation while being a full-time, single dad. His daughters, now teenagers, are old enough that he can devote more time to building guitars, and Jackson made the decision to launch his own brand with CEO Jon Gold (formerly of Fender) heading up the business end. “I had a bunch of ideas that I’d collected over the years, and I thought, here, I’ll stick them all into one product line,” Jackson said.

GJ2 is a small, three-man operation in Southern California, where all of the instruments—including the pickups—are designed and built in-house by Jackson himself. He plans on starting slow by debuting a single model with a variety of available features, using high-quality materials and components. The brand is launching with a single model, the Arete, which is an ancient Greek word for excellence. Jackson said that he expects to bring additional models, potentially something “substantially different,” in the next 12 months.

“It’s about taking your time and bringing something to the market that’s viable—that working musicians can use,” he explained.

The Arete is available in two levels: 4-Star and 5-Star. Both share a sculpted, high-access heel; compound radius fingerboard (10”–14”); Habanero BW Neck V and Habanero BW Bridge V humbuckers; original Floyd Rose tremolo, Gotoh tuners; and neck-through-body construction with a three-piece center section. GJ2 offers H/S/S and H/S/H configuration on request. Guitars start at $2,999 for the 4-Star.

There is a market for $3K guitars but not much market for $3K Floyd guitars. That is simply a fact Matt. People who are commenting on the price are doing so, mindful that the list of guitars with probably 80% of the build quality that sell for 60% less is long indeed. There are plenty of luthiers out there who can make an extraordinary instrument for 1/2 this cost. It makes no sense to insult total strangers for opinions that have merit, despite your annoyance. Grover is a legend no doubt but face it, the list price on these will appeal to a select few. Wait and learn.

Most of the comments are from guys who think they know all. Well with exception of Chuck, I'd say that you guys no very little.Or some of you are Tone Nazi Wankers. Lets all complain as much as we can about everything you non contributors. Just like most net surfers. The real sad thing is that most music appreciators are the worst for whining on the net. These guitars are likely to be really good & the natural finish will look tits in the flesh. But I'll reserve my JUDGEMENT until I've actually played one. Go back to e-bay & buy your cheap crap, leave the good stuff for the people that know what it is.

Nice idea. To bad the guitar is so ugly. Good luck to him anyway. Im sure he builds great instruments.

That headstock looks kinda like the old Heartfield Talons from the late 80's/early 90's. The guitar building business is super saturated and competitive but I wish you the best of luck Grover.

I'm seriously worried when this many people want guitars that are built overseas. ME, ME, ME. Gimme something cheap. Who cares if Americans have jobs, as long as I get what I want CHEAP!!!. Better wake up, people.

Basswood, korina, mahagony - not very original. I am not a fan of the floyd's either, only everyone does that. But i am happy to see he is back in business and kinda intrigued to see what he comes up with next.
Huh??

Doesn't do a thing for me. I can't imagine very many of these being sold...
