I get the wanting the retro strat look, or the LP look, play those instruments, if that's the look you want, being a luthier, Jame's Tyler, by any builder's standard's, (luthier)they do not come any better, his guitar, his design! Game over. Enjoy!

I just ordered the jtv-69S - sunburst. It does look better than the 69. I bought a 2012 Fender/Roland Strat. It arrived unplayable. I spent $75 to set the action and harmonics, only to find an hour into rehearsal, the tuning effect knob was faulty. The 12-string effect was cutting in and out and would sometimes stick in the baritone mode. Otherwise it was a fine instrument, but I'm really hoping the jtv-69s is "the guitar" it is advertised to be. The "paddle" headstock turned me off at first, but it's growing on me.

Wish they'd put a Bigsby on the JTV-59P, I'd grab one in a shot!

Gotta say, I have an old variax 300, it got a good thrashing with the ugly stick, but I love it. Bought it in 2005 and recently had to change the piezo elements as one failed during a gig. (the first sign of trouble after 7 years). After I did a set up on the neck when I first got it, it has out-performed everything else I have.. I will be buying a JTV69s soon and if it is half as good as my old Variax 300, it will be money well spent. As for the appearance of the guitar, Line 6 is sensibly avoiding the likelihood of a law suit, bear in mind that Fender has, in conjunction with Roland, already issued a modelling guitar (Fender VG Strat) that doesnt really seem to compete with the Variax. (Lawyers enter stage left)

I have wanted one of these for a while but was holding out for when they had magnetic pickups and a version, preferably strat style (was hoping theyd come up with something more akin to a PRS or maybe a Tele or Gretsch for fun, but anyhow, ONE that had a MAPLE fretboard, or at least an ebony one. Well, the JTV-69 SSS now comes in maple fretboard so I just pulled the trigger. Only in black which is not my preference, but they dont have many other options I like and black is always classic, and with the maple neck is somewhat reminiscent of Gilmour's signature and Claptons' blackie, and adore Gilmour and respect especially early Clapton. To go on a ramble. I owe 2 versions of the Gibson robot, which people love to bash. well, let me tell all of you. the 2008 version sounds great and works just fine and is very useful, and looks mostly classic. I just bought the 2012 version, it is faster than my 2008, has different pickups( are complementary) so decided to keep both versions, plus the 2012 does a bunch of extra things, mostly the piezo I like. And it's all done analog. The magnetic pickups, P90-H neck and Burstbucker 3 neck sound great, and I have 13 varied very good guitars. The battery life could be longer, but it comes with 2 batteries, as the Line 6 does not. I ordered the Line 6 as it will have many more acoustic models and the You Tube videos impressed me with the tones, and speed of changing tunings, albeit digitally. I've read about some complaints but Sweetwater said they presold almost all of the new ones coming in, so that's gotta tell you people like them. I just hope the neck and all of the Variax has the quality of my Gibson robots, because my Fender American Deluxe Strat neck, fretboard, frets, knobs, and finish do NOT compare to the Gibson's, for the same price. I figured if STeve Howe told me he likes and uses the Variax, who the heck am I to criticize!

I haven't quite decided whether I'm a bit torqued that they now have the SSS instead of the HSS configuration (since I own the latter). I agree that the JTV69S pickguard and single coil just looks better than the black humbucker in the JTV69 which really upsets the aesthetics and flow of the strat-like curves in my opinion.

Why can't Line 6 make a prewired Strat pickguard that I can install on a Strat compatible guitar? I would buy a Squier guitar and install it.

I agree slyfusion - the pickguard shape ruins it for me. I don't think they will do anything with the headstock, but the pickguard could at least be shaped like a normal Strat.

The JTV69S looks a little better, but still more 80s than 60s (esp. the headstock). I'd love to see more the Variax in a more traditional 60s vibe.
