Lollar Pickups Introduces the LollarTron Humbucker

The LollarTron is a humbucker-sized pickup that channels the sound of a vintage Filter’Tron.

Vashon Island, WA (May 9, 2012) – Lollar pickups announce the release of the new LollarTron humbucking guitar pickups.

Putting a new twist on an old favorite, the LollarTron is a humbucker-sized pickup that channels the sound of a vintage Filter’Tron. A2 magnets, custom covers, lot’s of attitude.

From company founder Jason Lollar: “starting with a ‘60s Country Gentleman as a benchmark, we went after the classic rock-a-billy ‘bucker tone, adding some Lollar “secret sauce” along the way. The neck pickup is warm and buttery, with a clear, present top end. The bridge pickup is fat and honky, with a rich low end and great clarity. Combined, they sparkle and spank with clarity and punch. They’ll cover everything from “OZ” rock to “Nashville Super Pickers”, and all points in between. We choose the humbucker size to make installation easier in a wider range of instruments.”

Available in singles or sets, with nickel or gold covers. Starting at $175.00 each.

Does Loller think that if he makes a pickup that looks like a filter'tron, that it magically will be a filter'tron? If you have a humbucker rout and want a Filter'tron, why wouldn't you just get a REAL Filter'tron in a humbucker case or the brittish mount from TV Jones? Also, I think you're on to something G.C!

Just installed one in an Archtop. Great sounding pickup. Filtertron Flavor with a hint of Humbucker. Not 100% Classic Filtertron tone, but a great variation of it. I'm digging it. Worth the price? If you have a Humbucker route & want a cool sounding Filtertron with a little guts, I think so.

Recently Lollar introduced a Fender style Wide Range Pickup for $200 and now this one. I have a theory, during Fenders 60th anniversary telebration they released the Cabronita edition with TV Jones Filtertrons is Lollar miffed he didn't get some Fender dollars? and is he going after both companies? BTW I'm a big fan of conspiracy theories.

Or, build a one-off totally unique instrument, like a chambered Les Paul styled guitar with Warmoth parts, exotic woods, and your exacting specs. I'd love to build a sweet chambered LP or even an L5S body with some sweet woods. While putting replacement pickups such as these into the traditional styled instruments pays great homage to those instruments, one can get real creative and come up with something totally unique, like putting these into a 335 or an LP, or a 72 Tele Thinline. These are exactly what I was looking for for my Baritone Tele project that I began last year. I wish I would have waited to have a local handwound made, even though I like it, but perhaps this will inspire another project.

I don't know of any classic rockabilly tune recorded with a guitar with Filter 'Trons, since most classic rockabilly was recorded up to 1959. Filter 'Trons were introduced in late 1958, but it took a while for them to really catch on, at least in recordings. If one wants a more authentic rockabilly sound, one should go for DeArmond, P-90 or telecaster pickups.

Lollar spent R&D time developing the pickup which has to be recovered over the number of units sold, thus the price. In the market for a speaker? Go buy one. In the market for a humbucker-sized Filter-tron sound-alike? Buy the cheaper GFS if you want to, but Lollar's will sound better. Worth the difference? Probably so.

Hmmm.... a LollarTron may be just the thing for the neck position in my Shop's new Tele we're currently building. We installed a Lollar 52T in our earlier Hexomorph Volcano Tele. The guys in my shop all agree that we've never heard a finer Tele neck pup than the 52T, and we've heard and installed just about everything. Bring on the LollarTron!
