PRS Announces Floyd-Equipped SE Torero

Premier Guitar

The SE Torero is PRS' first shred-minded guitar with a Floyd Rose, EMG pickups and neck-through-body construction.

Stevensville, MD (January 14, 2010) -- The SE Torero offers many “firsts” for PRS Guitars, and is dubbed by Paul Reed Smith himself as “a shredder’s dream.” Features unique to the new SE Torero and first ever for PRS are the use of a Floyd Rose bridge, EMG pickups, and neck-through body construction.

“The Torero has our quality with a Floyd Rose tremolo and EMGs. It’s very cool.” Paul Reed Smith

The minimal/unpronounced heel smoothly blends into the body. That coupled with the deeper, lower cutaway increases sustain and gives easier and smoother accessibility to the upper frets while pick-ups provide power, clarity and definition. The bound ebony fretboard with jumbo frets and no inlays paired with a mahogany body and flame-maple veneer give this guitar a very distinct look.

“I am excited to bring this new model to market. We incorporated a lot of firsts for PRS in the Torero that should appeal to players who may not have considered PRS in the past,” commented Doug Shive, SE Business Unit Manager.

Detailed specifications for the SE Torero are as follows: mahogany body with flame-maple veneer, arm carve and bound top; 3-piece maple neck with thru-neck construction and a wide-thin carve with a heavily carved heel area, a 25 ½” scale length, an ebony bound fretboard with no inlay, jumbo frets and a bound headstock; standard EMG 81 and 85 pickups, a master volume and tone, 3-way blade switch and remote battery box; chrome hardware, an original Floyd Rose 1000 Series bridge, and standard PRS tuners and standard strap buttons.

Wayne Johnson, PRS Amp team member describes this new model as “sonically devastating,” and PRS’s SE Inspector Dong Chang also offered, “This guitar makes you play harder.”

Part 2/CONTINUED FROM BELOW..... out of the way. Overall the tone, sustain, and feel that the Torero provides is the best I have ever played on a guitar for under $1000. I only have 2 gripes about this guitar. One, for the price paid, it should come with a hard shell case. Two, Torero which means bullfighter in Spanish is a really campy name and very un-metal like. But that doesn't take away that this is a great guitar worth owning. I am more of a metal/hard rock player and as the article states, I would have not considered a PRS before, but this model definitely expands the market to appeal to shredders and metal heads. Once I again, I will stress that this guitar's first impression in your hands before you even plug in is "quality" and nothing short of it. I enjoy playing this guitar very much and even after going guitar shopping in the last few weeks, I can't come to terms to buy anything else because nothing I can afford even comes close, compares and competes in terms of quality, tone, and the feel of this guitar. Unless Jimmy Page, Dave Mustaine, or Edward Van Halen give me one of their signature guitars, I am just going to end up buying another Torero instead, but I will hold out for a while and see if PRS does any updates or changes to future models first. Hope you enjoy my opinion.

I have a 2011 SE Torero, Royal Blue and for the last 6 months it has been a dream guitar. I know that this guitar will never satisfy the "purists" out there because it is not USA made and it doesn't have bird inlays but that is of no concern to me as I am a hobbyist guitar player. After playing similar models with the same features from other brands such as Ibanez, ESP LTD, and Schecter, what makes the SE standout from them is just the quality. Just the feel, the tone, the small details really stand out, which justifies it being the highest priced PRS SE. The biggest thing you will notice on this guitar is the quality of build that it is. Aside from the EMGs and Floyd Rose, it is very similar to a PRS SE Custom 24 of which I also own (2010 25th Anniversary) but it clearly stands on its own. The classic combo of EMG 81/85 is awesome and a great choice. The Floyd Rose is great and an Original model, not a FR Special model like the similar brands mentioned above. The neck thru design is as described, complete access to the higher octave without even thinking about it. The sustain is awesome and soaring harmonics are everywhere. It is hard to go play another guitar that doesn't have the neck thru design that this SE has, it is that good. I do prefer the thickness of the SE Custom 24 more as the Torero is a little thin ( I have big hands and long fingers) but it is something I can adapt to. I prefer the Torero for shredding and the SE Custom 24 for rhythm, but that is for my personal projects. The ebony fretboard is smooth, and the lack of inlays is no issue, much like a Spanish Classical Guitar. There are dot markers on the binding. The EMGs can speak for themselves, just awesome for the tone I like to play. I would prefer a toggle switch instead of the blade switch for pick up selection and for it to be by the bridge/above the tone knob instead of below the knobs as it takes getting use to switching pickups while playing and pushing the tremolo
