Following on the heels of
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith and
Guitar Hero: Metallica, the
announcement of Guitar Hero: Van Halen was an unexpected and pleasant turn of events in the saga of music video games. Then,
the trailer came out and there was a conspicuous absence: Michael Anthony. Guitar Hero's publisher, Activision, confirmed that
the only bass player in the game would be Wolfgang -- even when you're playing as the much-younger, heavily spandex-ed Van Halen. That's right, you can play as
Van Halen II-era 24-year-old EVH right alongside his 18-year-old son. Hey, we like Wolfie and know enough about VH politics to not be surprised by Sammy’s absence in the game, but no Michael Anthony? C’mon! Any representation of early Van Halen without Michael Anthony is blasphemous.
