Summer NAMM: Benedetto Travel Archtop & Solidbodies

by Premier Guitar

Benedetto's new archtop takes jazz sounds on the road

Nashville, TN (July 1, 2008) -- Keeping up on playing while you're on the road is a perennial problem for pretty much anyone who travels. It's why we've looked in depth at travel guitars, and presented a cheap solution to traveling with an amp. At Summer NAMM, Benedetto showed us that they're thinking the same way with their travel-sized archtop. With carved woods and a 23" scale, the travel archtop stays true to Benedetto quality at a portable size.

We also look at the company's flagship Manhattan archtop, their Bravo Elite 16" model, and some of their solidbody guitars, including the new Bene Pro.

This is especially for Miss Manners...either you can't read or you are just out to be an a.sh..e. Not a single comment of mine was the least bit disrespectful of Bob Benedetto whom I admire. As I said , he is among the best luthiers in the world...I doubt if even he would go so far as to claim to be "the best"...and neither can you state that he is the best until you've seen the work of every luthier in the world. If you want to see the work of 22 of the finest luthiers in the world read the book "Blue Guitar". Bob's guitar is certainly among the finest in the book...and, by the way, what does "raised in a barn" have to do with respect? Also by the way, I'm the same age as Bob Benedetto so I'm pretty sure I no longer qualify for the term "dude", dude!

Hey Ray, when PG features you I'm going to venture that no one will utilize the comments section to do what you're doing to Bob. Were you raised in a barn? Show some respect. Jesus Christos, dude.

Sort of on the topic, anyone who wants to see some of the most beautiful archtops in the world should get their hands on the book "Blue Guitar". It is a tribute, by 22 different luthiers, to the late Jimmy D'Aquisto "acknowledged to be the premiere archtop maker of our time". Bob Benedetto is featured in the book and his guitar is beautiful to say the least...but...as you will see, he is only "among the best" archtop builders in the world. I am not suggesting this to "slam" Bob Benedetto but before we get into a discussion about who is best, take a look at some of his fellow geniuses...I guarantee you will be drooling over more than a few of the guitars in the book.

Benedettos are above what some call top of the line. They really are the best.

Umm. whatever. Bob's stuff is top notch, I can attest to that.

yeah..i gotta agree..I dont see the value either, though they are wonderful. Also...i watch the resale value at shows and on ebay. I dont see these things doubling in value. Most of the luthiers special orders go for less the original price at resale. That is true for Dale Ungar, Baker, Benedetto and others. I guess if you got a Benny back when they were around 5k, you would have made money. But do u guy think this market has topped out? (im sure this will stir up some high end owners)
I have some old Gibsons that actually did double (some tripled) in value, but the important thing is that i can take them to any gig and play the hell out of them. Would u take anything that was 18k and lean it up againt the amp while u talk to ur friends on break? I think that would be stressful ..no? Bob builds "guitars for stars'...not actual guitar players.

To all concerned, I knew I should have made myself more clear in my first comment...I AM AND ALWAYS WILL BE a great fan of Benedetto's abilities in making some of the most beautiful and best ACOUSTIC guitars in the world. I merely pointed out that the solid body I saw when I went to his website did not impress me. I will clarify now that I have no idea how well it plays, but there are a lot of great playing guitars out there for a lot less. It seems to me that to be worth twice as much, there should be something more special about it than the name.
