PG's Brett Petrusek is On Location at the 2008 Arlington Guitar Show and Auction, talking to vintage dealers about the state of the vintage market. Is it a bad time for buyers? Dealers? What's selling? Are guitars a good investment? The dealers themselves address these questions in this video.

I gave up a 70's vintage Tele I owned for 25 years and swapped for a later day guitar about 1/2 it's worth to a Nashville celeb. I was afraid that I'd go broke someday and reluctantly sell it. But I feel better knowing that the guitar is in good hands to someone who sincerely wanted it. And I have a guitar that plays equally well, if not better.

If you haven't been in the business for thirty years, it is very difficult to judge the investment value of a guitar. For me, I find it hard to invest more than I can afford to lose. I have a 2K Martin and a 3K Hamer. I figure I will play them both every day for the next twenty years and the enjoyment I get from the quality feel and sound are worth the dollar a day amortized over the long view. If I do sell them down the road and I even get my money back out, I will have enjoyed them each day for decades for free. If I make a profit, that will be a thrill. I have to ask, am I an investor, or a musician? I think I am a musician who appreciates the stability and playability of a fine instrument, and choosing a fine instrument that holds its value just makes sense. When it was time to invest in a quality electric, I had to choose between a 3K used Les Paul, or a brand new limited edition Hamer. So far I haven't been sorry about my decision. There are only thirty guitars like my Studio Custom Redwood (#29/30), and there are thousands of old Gibson Les Pauls that I have a hard time telling one from another. And of course a quality Martin acoustic is a joy that needs no explaining.

WTF-- the audio quality isn't 5.1 in 96k and Steven Spielberg's DP didn't light it. What crap.

J/K. I Just thought I'd throw that in there before the usual morons do. Great news piece about the market. I'm not going to worry about my 62 Strat now!!!!!!!
