PG's Joe Coffey is On Location in Stevensville, MD, for Experience PRS 2009 where he catches up with tonehound Dweezil Zappa. In this interview, Dweezil talks about exploring PRS' wood shop, finding the ideal woods for his one-off guitar and stumbling across an amazing feat of nature - a naturally combined flame and quilted maple piece of wood, which Dweezil uses for the body. In addition, he talks about using a PRS guitar for the very first time during Zappa Playing Zappa's performance at Experience PRS

I went to see the ZPZ tour in 06, and just went for my second time last night (Hampton Beach, NH). I met him, and we talked for a minute or two (really exciting for me, I'm only 14). I gotta say, I was amazed at how much his guitar rig AND tone changed! I saw a video of him towards the end of 09 and his rig was TOTALLY different from what he's playing through now! He never ceases to amaze, and he is truly a unique and original guitarist. He actually was playing through some amazing pedal that made his guitar sound like a violin (Or perhaps a viola or cello. It was a deeper tone than a violin, but it was a "string" instrument. I'm not entirely sure)

Dweezil is a very laid back guy and an excellent guitarist..I chatted with him at the 09 Experience and we had a few laughs..The Zappa plays Zappa stuff was inspiring...Very cool video and GUITAR!

I concur on his comments about consistency on an instrument. It is really difficult to go from guitar to guitar when they are all set up different...scale length, string gauge, neck dimensions, etc...especially if you have been using particular dimensions for any period of time. TO go from a 1 11/16" to a 1 5/8" nut is a big difference...or from jumbo to medium jumbo frets...there are many adjustments the player has to make from guitar to guitar and some are easier than others. I like to have some degree of consistency in the guitars I play but I still like to experiment with other types...

I've Dweezil numerous times and spent time chatting with him, and he is about as geniune as a guy with his background can be. And honestly, I've never been a huge FZ fan, but certainly appreciate him.

Well I guess I'll be the first. Let me start by saying that Dweezil and ZPZ are amazing. I saw the first tour, and was blown away. I agree that different instruments are essential to creating a colorful palette. No two guitars are alike. Every one has a "Personality" all it's own. No matter what the headstock says. I've spent hours going from guitar to guitar looking for the one that has that certain "feel". When you find that "one", you just know it. Let me finish by saying that you shouldn't be swayed by hype or popularity. Just sample what the luthiers offer, and find what suits you best.
