PG's Jordan Wagner is On Location in Anaheim, CA, for the 2010 NAMM Show where he visits the Yamaha Guitars booth. In this segment, we get to see their updated line of SBG Series guitars.

Some of the changes to the beloved SBG Series guitars include, new hardware from Tune-o-matic and the option of having Seymour Duncan or EMG pickups. In addition, Yamaha is now offering new finishes on various models within the SBG series.

Yamaha lost their minds! What ever happened to high end, middle and budget line of guitars? I would have wanted one in the &1000 range but $4000! for that I'll get a Real Les Paul that will appreciate in value.

FYI..Yamaha did not follow through on selling these guitars in the USA, however, they are apparently available elsewhere in the world, at a price that you probably won't want to pay (about $3000 usd) I contacted Yamaha USA and was told that they "might" have future plans to sell them, but don't expect widespread distribution..it will be a "special order" item..or you will have to pay very dearly for it.

I've had a hundred guitars and the SGB2000 is as good as it gets.

When did the top carve change on these? I have a 1984 SG-3000 and the top carve on it is a constant curve. The models shown here have a more Les Paul like top carve.

$4000 is the retail price. I was at the Yamaha booth while another magazine was doing a video interview about these guitars and I heard them say that the MAP (minimum advertised price) is about $2100. So, you will be able to get one for significantly less than $4000..and I love these guitars and have 2 SBGs, but there is no way I would even pay $2100 for one. Too many great Yamaha guitars available used. Although I would happily accept the antiqued ivory/cream color SBG.

I paid $850 NEW for my first SBG-2000 in 1980. I currently have a sunburst SBG-2000; my cost? $500 used. It's nice to see the line being developed, but these are for "rich folks". I'll stick with what I've got...

I habe been playing TELS and GIBSON"S since a 56 TELE cost 150.00 and was a used Guitar. I have moved up into GibonlW/ P-90's or a HERITAGE 535 set up over any new ax's anyone can come out with, bottom line is the guitar is what it is simple wood, strings, tuners and now every manufacturer is trying to make it seem like they are RE-building the GUITAR.

I did then( 68) and still today PREFER GIBSONS over any other maufacturer ( FENDER TOO) not to say that other's aren't as good it's just that GIBSON has a great variety of guitars for all styles of music and tones. FENDER 's TLE and STRAT will always be a main stay SINMPLE YET THEY DO THE JOB.BUT WHAT FENDER HAS THET MOST DNT IS GREAT GREAT GREAT AMPS !!! BOTH VINTAGE AND NEW...THOUGH I PREFER THE VINTAGE BLACK FACES.

$430.00 bucks wullget you a lotof other just fine guitars...back in the early 70;s I was playiing with EPI:S and SQUIRS and ended up with 4 albums s aND BEING ABKLE TO AFFORD WHAT EVER I WANTED,,,
IT WAS ONLY THEN I BOUGHT THE HGIGHER END STUFF WHY>>>>>CAUSE I COULD !!!!

DID ANYONE TELL THESE PEOPLE THERE IS A RECESSION???
AND most musicians live in pOverty even after they Put out an album !!! LOL

THESE WONT LAST ,,,WHY DO THEY MAKE THERE PUPS ONLY TO FIT THERE GUITARS AS WEEK ARE'NT THEY CUTTING THERE OWN THROATS THAT WAY>????

Nice, but not $4K worth of nice. Also: what Guitartek said about it weighing a ton? Absolutely right. The SBG's came out when Gibson's quality was at an all-time low, and at the time, they out-Les-Paul'ed a Les Paul. Now...things are different. If I had $4000 to spend on an electric guitar, I'd honestly go for a custom made guitar, resale be damned. I'd go for a Collings 290 or a Scott French SF3 over and above a Gibson or a Yamaha. Why settle for anything less than exactly what I want?

First off, I'm a musician, not a investor.
A guitar is just tool, nothing more. I don't worry about resale- it's not my stock portfolio. This collector attitude of lets just make a buck, is what sent these price's through the roof. I can take a $400-$500 guitar, Hot Rod it for a few hundred dollars, and slay these $4k investments.

You must be out of your mind. I had a great SBG 2000. I bought it because Santana played a version of that guitar. It never sounded like his because of those Yamaha pickups. He changed his to P.A.F.s.Very good guitar, no way in hell was it even close to being worth $4500.You see Vox had to come with a reasonably priced model for their line!
