PG's Acoustic Editor Gayla Drake Paul walks us through her latest review of the Vox AGA70 Acoustic Guitar Amplifier.

The AGA70 is ideal for the acoustic performer because it's designed to perfectly project the subtle resonances and sweet, mellow tones of the acoustic guitar. Each of the two channels (Normal and Tube Pre) is equipped with a standard guitar input, as well as a microphone input with selectable phantom power. An electro-acoustic guitar or mic can be connected to each channel, making this the perfect amp for a singer-instrumentalist. An additional Lo-Z / Hi-Z switch on each input accommodates a variety of signal levels.

The Tube Pre channel preamp features a 12AU7 (ECC82) dual-triode vacuum tube.

In addition to Bass, Middle, and Treble tone controls, each channel provides an effective COLOR control. Working in harmony with the traditional EQ, the COLOR knob allows you to quickly shift the tonal response to match your performance. This additional control accommodates a broad variety of sounds ranging from thick and robust to sparkling and clean.

Also, it features onboard Reverb (both channels) and an on/off switch for a Chorus effect.

Agree about the "color" knob--a bit hard to tell on video. Maybe going immediately from one extreme to the other (instead of gradually) would have helped the online listener discern the difference. Also, what kind of pickup is on that Voyage-Air? That certainly affects overall tone of the amp. One more thing I would like to hear on the amp is some single string and upper register runs. How does the amp sound and react apart from picking around chords? Bummer about the chorus--I wonder much more the amp would cost if they added a few controls for it. Agree with the previous comment about hearing the vocal qualities of the amp. Good review!

Great review, as usual. A "nice to have" on these acoustic/vocal combo amp reviews would be a short vocal demo. I know this is a guitar mag, and rightly focuses on the guitar capabilities; but it would help those of us looking for a mini PA for coffee house gigs, et cetera. Keep up the good work, Gayla and PG!!!

Sorry for the just-in-from-the-thunderstorm chic, folks, but the amp is the pretty one anyway!
