PG's Shawn Hammond walks us through his most recent review--the Goodsell Valpreaux 21 combo--which is featured in the January 2011 issue of Premier Guitar.

The 21-watt Valpreaux weighs a very manageable 30 pounds—roughly three-quarters the heft of a blackface Deluxe Reverb—and it's available in any covering or grill-cloth option listed on Mojo Musical Supply's website. Ours came in striking red Tolex with a black-and-tan grill. Top-panel features include a delightfully simple EQ section with crème-colored Tone, Volume, and Gain knobs, as well as Reverb, Depth, and Speed knobs for the three-spring reverb and footswitchable, bias-vary tremolo circuit. There's also a metal vent beneath the handle to help keep the tubes cool so they last longer and operate more reliably. Other Valpreaux features include a 12" Goodsell RGH speaker modeled after a Celestion G12H, three 12AX7 preamp tubes, and a 5AR4/GZ34 rectifier tube that runs approximately 390 volts.

I'd like to hear it with an ES335 or epi casino or a les paul

This is the first mediocre Goodsell amp I've heard. Lacks the usual abundant harmonics; reverb and tremolo uninspiring. Shawn does a pretty good job of letting you hear the amp instead of showing off chops. I agree with Tom Mc that Shawn should have demonstrated the range of the tone stacks and the gain instead of just sticking with his "sweet spot". Very little demo of the amp's bottom end or tone when driven hard with chords.

Doesn't sound very blackface-ish to me... Does sound like some of the Valco-built amps and Supro clones I've owned.

Nice review, it gets across what's needed to properly inform us of what the amp's capable of and it's best sounds. The playing from Shawn is, I think, actually an asset, as someone doing a Satch Boogie with a Superstrat would totally be the wrong choice. Keep up the good work PG!

Predictable comments about the quality of guitar playing ...that stuff gets really petty and old. Premier Guitar does a better job than any other guitar mag by far when it comes to in print content and online content. Sheesh. He's not auditioning for you, he's doing a good job of showing what the amp is capable of, in a short period of time. No good deed goes unpunished. Great review, great demo ... love the amp. Wish I had the cash to spring for it right now. Good job Mr. Hammond. Thanks for taking the time to do an online demo.

I like this guy's playing style recordhead, Guitar Slim & John Patterson. Sorry. He'd be awesome at film scores.

Not much of a demo of the amps range. "Here's my favorite setting" and never demonstrated the range of any of the controls. Made it sound like a one-trick-pony. Seemed like he was making it up as he went along without much preperation.

I appreciate the video review BUT Shawn should stick to being editor in chief and let someone who can narrate a review without laughing and can play the guitar well enough to demonstrate the amp's versatility.

Not sure how he got his current gig at PG. not the best player to be demoing this amp.
