http://www.premierguitar.com PG's Jordan Wagner walks us through his latest print review--the Stadler Goldtop Solidbody electric (featured in the February 2011 issue of Premier Guitar magazine).

The Stadler Goldtop features a butternut body with ivoroid binding, a choice of either one or two singlecoil pickups, a two-piece, 25.625" scale maple neck with a maple fingerboard (that Wagner describes as being as "fat as a baseball bat...and one of the best riffing necks I've ever played." In addition it features replica Kluson tuners and includes a Cedar Creek case.

Hey how does it sound clean, with a little reverb ,with some chorus ,with some compresser, without those three chord metal riff's.Does it only sound good distorted? How's the intonation on that wrap-around bridge? How's the roll-off on the tone control?

My apologies, Jordan, if it seems as if I'm picking on you with this feedback, but... Honestly - I cannot hear anything unique about that guitar through the overly-overdriven maelstrom of distortion. I only hear the buzzy fizz of the amp, and not the true character of the guitar. Is it really "old school fat sound?" Where'd the fat go? I wouldn't be caught dead posing as one of Jerry's Kids, but the body design simply begs for Garcia-style cleans to be at least considered. The guitar is beautiful, with a mix of design influence. Obviously Doug Irwin's body shape, with a topping of early Gibson Les Paul, and headstock by Ibanez (like Ibanez Studio). I wonder how it really sounds? Jordan and/or Premier Guitar, can you please try to really give these reviews their due. A fine axe needs a fair shake. Thanks.

Jordan, it would help me evaluate the guitar's tones if you could play a few licks using each pick-up setting with the clean channel of the amp. When all of the playing is through the distortion channel, it's hard to know what part of the tone comes from the guitar and what part comes from the amp.
