Rebecca Dirks is On Location with Elwood Francis, guitar tech for Billy F. Gibbons to check out Billy's live rig. See the Gretsches and Les Pauls, check out the detailed settings on Billy's Marshal JMP-1s, and learn what strings, picks, and slides Reverend Willy G. uses night after night.

Great interview! Unfortunately, I think that some of you guys kinda miss the point, that Billy and almost everyone associated with him, are in SHOW BUSINESS. Yep! Thats his job and thats why he travels from city to city playing the same music, pretty much the same way week after week. In return, he gets love and adulation from his fans, he gets the satisfaction that comes with success, and he gets paid bundles of money for doing something he obviously loves to do.

That is so kool!!

Well of course you don't need a good cable if you're turning your treble controls all the way down!

Tone questors take note. Everytime I review one of these I'm reminded of the futility in the pursuit. Close, but no cigar.

I'd like to try some of those extra light strings, my problem is that at the start of the night I have a light touch. But as the night goes on, the music gets louder, and I get more 'inspired', I hit harder. The Rev is obviously VERY consistent in his attack if he's playing such hard driving music with such a light touch. He pretty much destroys the myth that one must use heavy strings to get heavy tone. As always, it's all in the fingers and brain, and the interplay between them.
I'd love to have The Rev perform the ceremony when my wife and I renew our vows on our 25th anniversary! You listenin' Willy G??

Rev. Willy was using .008 GHS sets in the late 1980s. I co-designed his picks with him from around the Eliminator Tour until around 2001, as I recall. He has used standard size 351 picks in heavy gauge for as long as I can remember. I would have to dig up one of his early "Have Mercy" / Billy G picks to verify the 1970s era. Yes, the thickness & material of his picks also effects his tone. Most or the bands who I have dealt with in the last 41 years do use .009s or .010s. As a reference, Chuck Berry still uses EXL-110s. Billy always has great tone, great feel, great sense of humor, & the respect of Eric Clapton & B.B. King, among many others! Always an interesting guy to talk music & guitars!

What's with the no light shooting..you are working with a visual medium, which means we need to be able to see what you're shooting. It would have been nice to be able to see what the guy was talking about.
