FOR A GUY THAT CLAIMS TO NOT USE EFFECTS AS GIMMICKS, I SURE HEARD A BUNCH OF GIMICY USES THERE.

If you can get a hold of a copy of "The Art of the Stompbox" from the Museum of Making Music in California, Nels and Henry Kaiser run through a load of effects for your edification. They do spontaneous jams and showcase the gear and such. It's great fun.

I once met Nels Cline after a show he did at a small club in NYC, back in '04 or '05. When I left the club I saw him standing on the curb with his gear, waiting for his ride to pick him up. I usually never go up and 'talk to celebs' but I decided to give it a shot this time. I'm glad I did because he was so nice, gracious, and approachable. We talked about music (his own and in general) for a short bit and when I left he even remembered my name when he said goodbye! I've never met a musician nicer to his fans than Nels.

I love that 59 Jazzmaster! The red Schroeder amp also is a beauty! Great interview.
