Dupree got his start with the King Curtis band. During his stint with the band, he opened for the Beatles and shared guitar duties with a young Jimi Hendrix. However, he's best known as a prolific session player whose work can be found on records by Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, James Brown, Joe Cocker, B.B. King, Otis Redding, and countless others. Dupree estimated that he'd played on more than 2,500 albums.
Dupree also recorded 10 of his own albums, including work with his band Stuff, comprised of fellow session musicians Eric Gale, Richard Tee, and Steve Gadd.
According to the New York Times, Dupree had completed a final album that has not yet been released.
Dupree was known for playing a modified Telecaster, and had a Yamaha signature model called the Super Jam SJ-800.
