NAMM '10 - Gretsch Guitars Eddie Cochran Model

January 15, 2010
PG's Rebecca Dirks is On Location in Anaheim, CA, for NAMM 2010 where she visits the Gretsch Guitars booth. In this segment, we get to check out their latest model from the Gretsch Custom Shop, the G6120EC Eddie Cochran Tribute Model.

During his all-too brief life and career, Eddie Cochran (1938-1960) only ever owned and played one main electric guitar, an orange Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins hollow-body he bought brand-new in 1955 at age 16 from the Bell Gardens Music Center in his hometown, Bell Gardens, CA. The guitar bore the serial number 16942, and his parents helped him buy it. A sharp young guitarist who was particular about his sound and knowledgeable about guitar design and modification, Cochran hot-rodded his Gretsch with a warmer-sounding dog ear neck pickup.

Virtually indistinguishable from the original, the Gretsch Custom Shop G6120EC Eddie Cochran Tribute model is authentic in every detail, from the aluminum nut and bridge to the famous dog ear neck pickup; from the distressed vintage orange nitrocellulose lacquer finish to the relic gold-plated hardware and Bigsby? B6GPVF vibrato tailpiece.

Its features include a bound laminated maple body and arched top, a specially shaped three-piece maple/walnut/maple neck with a 22-fret 9-radius bound rosewood fingerboard, a Seymour Duncan? Dog Ear single-coil neck pickup, a Seymour Duncan? DynaSonic? single-coil bridge pickup, three-way switching, rosewood bridge base, vintage-style gold Gotoh? SE700-05M tuners, modified plexi pickguard, western block fingerboard inlays (depicting cactus, steer heads and fences), lower body bout G brand, and pearloid steer head/Gretsch logo inlay on the bound headstock.

NAMM - Seymour Duncan Yngwie, Slash Pickups & More

January 14, 2010
PG's Joe Coffey is On Location in Anaheim, CA, for NAMM 2010 where he swings by the Seymour Duncan booth. In this segment, Seymour Duncan's Frank Falbo walks us through a whole host of new products including signature pickups from Yngwie Malmsteen, Slash and Slipknot's Mick Thomson EMTY. Other new products include the Custom 5, Full Shred, Vintage Staggered and Custom Staggered all for 7-string guitars. And last but not least, SD unleashed a new P-Rails for the bridge position.?

The STK-S10 YJM Fury is a hum-canceling single-coil-sized pickup based SD's original Stack. Recommended for rock, neo-classical, shred, hard rock, power metal, and heavy metal. The YJM Fury will directly retrofit most single-coil equipped guitars. The YJM Fury will work well with any bolt-on guitar that utilizes traditional single-coil-size Strat pickups.?

The Alnico II Pro Slash is like the standard APH-1 Alnico II Pro, which uses an Alnico 2 magnet, however, the Slash model is wound with just enough boosted output to push a stock Les Paul toward the sweet sustain and rude crunch that characterizes Slash's sound as heard on hundreds of tracks. In addition, it comes with some of the same appointments found on the Seymour Duncan pickups in Slash's '86 recording axe, including single-conductor cable, long-legged bottom plate, and wooden spacer.

Like its predecessors (The AHB-1 and AHB-2), the Blackouts AHB-3 EMTY provides distinctive, screaming metal tones, packing a serious mid-range punch, thicker, darker chords than other humbuckers and hard-hitting driving leads. Mick asked for tighter bottom, and more searing top end cut, and Seymour Duncan delivered. The AHB series conveys a less compressed tone, with a more extended frequency response helping to cancel hum by using balanced inputs.?

The versatile Custom 5 7-string is a moderate to high output humbucker, perfect for pop, country, blues, classic rock and heavy rock with its deeper bottom end and expanded output. Recommended for the bridge position, add an SH-1n 7-string in the neck position for real deal P.A.F. tones. Two symmetrical coils and short Allen head pole pieces produce a more intense, focused magnetic field while the Alnico 5 magnet maintains an organic attack and feel.

The Full Shred is perfect for rock, heavy metal, speed metal, and any music featuring fast, aggressive, solo playing. It comes with a four-conductor hookup cable for various switching options.?

The Vintage Staggered 7-string delivers a deep punchy tone with bright sparkle for single-coil strat guitars, recommended for country, pop, surf, rockabilly, blues, ska, classic rock and any player that wants to marry a vintage sound with the new era of 7-stringed guitars. Its complete with hand-ground Alnico 5 magnets.

The Custom Staggered 7-string pickup provides a distinct vintage tone with greater sustain and full sounding harmonics that cuts through the mix, but cleans up nicely when you back off the volume. Its 6-string counterpart has been championed by countless artists over its long history for its strong, overwound Strat tone, most recently making an appearance on Fenders David Gilmour Signature Series Strat.?

The SHPR-2b P-Rails Hot, delivering the same tonal flexibility as its predecessor, but specifically designed to provide a punchier, more aggressive tone in the bridge position. The P-Rails Hot features a beefed up coil wind and 2 powerful Alnico 8 magnets, which rival ceramic magnets in power but maintain the sweet sustain Alnico is known for. The P-90 coil in the P-Rails Hot is wound with a special wire type, selected for output and clarity.

December 23, 2009
PG's Jordan Wagner is On Location in Davenport, IA, on 12/07/09 where he catches up with Megadeth's guitarists Dave Mustaine and Chris Broderick. In this video segment, both Dave and Chris walk us through their thrash metal setups.

As we all know, Mr. Mustaine uses signature Dean Guitars (with 6-on-a-side) and Marshall power amps and cabs. To keep things simple and preventing from a lot of moving pieces that could break down, they both use DigiTech GSP1101 preamp. The only thing different in Chris Broderick's rig is his guitar, he currently is using a Ibanez Prestige. While Broderick preferes the RG series, he's rolling with the Prestige because of the trem system.
