In this interview, Dave Clarke gives us some insight into their R&D process at Vox while developing the 15 watt Night Train head. In addition, he tells us about the struggle between developing something that was still "Vox," but in a more modern vein. And more importantly, lighter!

The Vox Night Train head features 2-12AX7 preamp tubes, 2-EL84 power tubes, selectable BRIGHT and THICK switches, dual power mode of either 15 watts (pentode power) or 7.5 watts (triode tone) and has an easy-to-navigate front panel.

PG's Joe Coffey is On Location at the 2009 New York Amp Show where he visits the Amp Lounge booth. In this segment, Frank LaMara walks us through several of their tone-saving products. The first gadget is called the Tone Bra, which is used to cover and muffle a speaker to give new speakers that vintage-esque sound and breakup. Also, we check out the Tone Skirt, which is a covering that can shield any or all of the four speakers in a 4x12 to limit output volume, but not hinder your tone. In addition, they have a speaker attenuator that is 100% reactive. Once again, it is designed for at-home players who still use a big setup and want that tube distortion, but don't want to be kicked out of their home or neighborhood. And the last thing we check out is the LA Custom Guitars Ty Tabor model that is said to be jokingly described as a "Lester" (a combo of a Tele and Les Paul).

The Philosopher's Tone is an analog compressor and sustainer. With variable Sustain (threshold), Blend (ratio) and Treble controls, it offers a range of compression sounds. Also, it contains a smooth diode clipping distortion with a blend control for clean or dirty compression sounds and any mixture of the two. The Philosophers Tone distortion can rock on its own, it is designed to play well with other dirt pedals in order to create a distortion tone unique to each player.

PG's Joe Coffey is On Location at the 2009 New York Amp Show where he visits the Fuchs Audio Technology booth. In this video segment, we get hear three of Fuchs' newest pedals; Noxious, Tri-Modulator and Verbrator. The Noxious is Black Label Society's Nick Catanese's signature distortion pedal. It includes a fully-adjustable input gain control, amp-like fully interactive Bass, Middle and Treble tone controls and a Master Volume, which is designed not to suck tone. With a low-noise input circuit based on Fuchs' Pure Gain pedal, and an output section that is like a miniature power amplifier, the Noxious can go from a mild to wild overdrive with no problem.

The Tri-Modulator is an chorus, flanger and tremolo pedal built in one small package.

The Verbrator is a new multi-purpose pedal that combines an all-tube effects loop with a studio grade reverb featuring a 32-Khz clock speed for full 16-K audio bandwidth. Not only is it a reverb pedal, but it's an effects loop. It features a level control and decay control allowing you to have a short medium or long decay reverb algorithm.

PGs Joe Coffey is On Location at the 2009 New York Amp Show where he stops by the Celestion booth. In this video, we not only get to hear some of Celestions newest speakers, including their to-be-released G10 Alnico Golds, but we get to hear them played through an assortment of drool-worthy amps like a Dumble Special Overdrive (with EL34 tubes), Trainwreck Liverpool and a Bruno Underground 30.

The new G10 Alnico Golds are said to blend unmistakable Alnico class with a rich low-end, creamy midrange and vintage chiming top-end.

Also, we get to hear some Heritage G12-65s, which are known for their fast attack and tightly controlled low-end.

In addition, we get a taste of G10 Greenbacks-low in output but with the weighty low-end balance of a 12 they offer creamy mid-range and smooth, vintage top-end.

And last but not least, we get to demo the Alnico Blue 12 (a favorite of Brian May), which is used for its dampened attack, warm lows, mellow upper-mids and brilliant bell-like top-end.

PG's Joe Coffey is On Location at the 2009 New York Amp Show where he stops by the Tonic Amps booth. In this segment, we check out two of Tonic's newest offerings, the D'Art and the Torpedo (with optional Reverb). The 50 watt D'Art (as seen in the video) has a 2-channel preamp (clean to mild distortion and then mild to wild distortion) and the standard package comes with EL84 power tubes. However, the amp can come loaded with 6L6, 5881, KT66, and KT77 tubes for greater tone coloring. It also features a 4-8-16 ohm impedance switch. The D'Art is built much like old Hiwatts.

The Torpedo Reverb is a 30 watt head with 4-EL84 power tubes and a full 17" reverb tank. The actual head is based on circuitry similar to an AC30 and contains a mid-boost switch. The reverb circuit is built similarly to that of old Matchless and Fender circuits.

PG's Joe Coffey is On Location at the 2009 New York Amp Show where he visits the Simple Amps room. In this video segment, we get to see two of Simple's newest products; the Traveler Series and the Big Iron 6VAV--the 2nd V standing for Vibrato. The Traveler Series consists of economy-minded portable amps that run on the same circuits as their big brothers, the Big Iron 6VA. All the different Traveler models feature a Jensen 10" MOD speaker and Mercury Magnetics transformers. They also come packed with either 6V6, 6L6 or EL34 tubes.

The Big Iron 6VAV amp comes with 6V6 power tubes, either 12AX7 or 12AU7 preamp tubes and runs hot at about 30 watts. The Big Iron 6VAV is built upon the same platform as its sister amp, the Big Iron 6VA, the difference lies in the second "V," which stands for the added built-in Vibrato feature controlled by knobs on the front panel.

PG's Joe Coffey is On Location for the 2009 New York Amp Show where he visits the Landry Amps booth. In this video segment, we get to check out Landry's LS100 model. Its a 100 watt head (also available in a 50 watt head) that features two independent channels (clean and distortion)--each channel has its own gain, treble, mid, bass and volume controls and the distortion channel has an additional gain stage accessible by the footswitch. Its constructed with EL-34, 12AT7 and 12AX7 tubes. In addition, its on a 16 gauge steel powder coated chassis, mounted in a solid birch cabinet with finger joint construction and features point to point wiring, orange drop capacitors and carbon comp resistors.

It provides volume and tone control and a three way mode switch (Moody, Breezey, Naughty). The Shaman JPM Standard is a Korean hand-made guitar that comes with either mahogany or flame maple body. PG's Pat Smith reviews the Collings 360 (named for a Texas highway) solidbody guitar, which he gave a Premier Guitar Premier Gear Award in the July '09 issue. Pat shows off the 360's gorgeous vintage Tobacco Sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer finish and simplistic dot inlays. The curly maple carved top sits on a one-piece mahogany body with a 24-7/8" scale neck that features an Indian rosewood fingerboard. Also, this model came with mini-humbuckers featuring '50s wiring. In addition to covering the 360's specs, Pat walks us through various tones the Collings 360 can produce.

In addition, the front panel features two fully independent channels with Volume, Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble, Presence controls. It also comes with a 2-button footswitch, tube-driven effects loop and a "low focus switch on the rear panel. The low focus switch provides 3 positions low, mid, high. Moving from low to high, the player gets to focus the low end, tailored to his/her needs, with low end increasing relative to the highs allowing for more low end with more focus.

G's Bob Goffstein walks us through his latest review on the Fender Custom '57 Twin-Amp. This reissue is based on the '57 manufactured by Fender's Custom Shop, but features a few changes thrown in versatility's sake. The transformers and choke were built by Mercury Magnetics Company. The '57 includes four Sovtek 12AX7WCs, relabeled Groove Tubes 12AX7R, two Groove Tubes-6L6GE and two Electro Harmonix 5U4GB rectifiers. The speakers are 12" Eminence Alnicos designed by Ted Weber of Weber VST. In addition, this '57 reissue comes with separate Bright and Normal channels, each with its own preamp circuit, separate Volume controls and two jacks, followed by Treble, Bass and Presence controls that are common to both channels.

PG's Gayla Drake Paul leads us through her latest review on the Takamine Glenn Frey Signature EF360GF. This Takamine guitar is based off a guitar acquired by Glenn Frey in 1994 with the only differences being the back and sides on his signature model are solid rosewood rather than laminated and it features a little GF logo on the headstock. In addition, the EF360GF features Takamine's proprietary onboard electronics. The neck is said to feel like a Les Paul and is 1-11/16" wide.

PG's Pat Smith walks us through his latest review of Flaxwood's Liekki ("flame" in Finnish). The Liekki features a body built from flaxwood materials and also includes a flaxwood resonating back plate. It also comes with Seymour Duncan SP90 Vintage Soapbar pickups, Schaller LP Tremolo, Celluloid inlays and Gotoh tuners.

In this video segment, we get to see and hear two new pedals from BSM; the RPA Major and the J-Fuzz. The RPA Major RPA "Major" model is the answer to many customer calls, demanding the hard, aggressive Ritchie Blackmore stage sound of the 70?s, without the need to get their amp heavily modified. The RPA Major offers a lot more gain compared to the stock RPA model with tons of crunch and a higher level of aggression. For the RPA Major, BSM had the idea to not only rebuild Blackmore's AIWA preamp stage during the "Burn" tour, but to also integrate the important high-pass function with the original cutoff frequency.

The J-Fuzz is a silicon-powered Fuzz-booster and packs a gritty punch for any signal chain.

In this video segment, Burkhard walks us through several new products; Sunday Driver, P-Split and the Little Lehle. The Sunday Driver is a a high end preamp with a convenient compact format. It features JFET-based circuitry and provides two modes of operation: "D" stands for Driver; in this mode, the guitar signal is amplified, with absolutely no modification, at the input impedance of a guitar amp, efficiently eliminating losses on the route through leads and effects; the signal remains strong and clear, retaining its full dynamics. The second setting "S" - as in Sunday - multiplies input impedance by four.

The P-Split stands "passive splitting" with maximum signal fidelity, making it possible to route an instrument to two amps simultaneously. It also features phase-reversal and ground switches with gold-plated contacts, making it a passive high end DI Box for all signal types.

The Little Lehle a genuine True-Bypass Looper/Switcher. It can be used to manage an effect-loop, or as a simple A/B box.

In this video segment, we get to check out the recently announced Haze Series, which features a 15 watt head (MHZ15) and a 40 watt combo (MHZ40C). The 15 watt head comes with 3-ECC83 preamp and 2-6V6 power amp valves, a traditional Marshall EQ section (Bass, Middle, Treble), two channels (Clean and Overdrive) and a channel-spanning Bright function. The accompanying Marshall cabs feature specially-designed Celestion Marquee (G12T-66) speakers. While many of the same features are included in the 40 watt combo, it does feature EL34 valves, a Presence control, extra effects (Echo, Vibe and Chorus), a Line Out for loudspeaker emulation and a feature that saves all effect settings for each channel and are recalled when switched back and forth. The Haze Series amp offerings should be in stores soon.

In the fifth installment of Reunion Blues' Vintage Guitars Road Show, the guys hit up Guitar Showcase at Large in San Jose, California.

In this segment:

We get to check out an early-50s Gibson ES-175 Electric Archtop which features the original specs, including a single P90 pickup in the neck position. Later models featured a humbucking pickup.

The next guitar was an original Epiphone Model 4 roundhole acoustic archtop. As described in the video, this is one of the oldest instruments to be featured in Vintage Guitar Show. Check out how they determine its authenticity..ONLY PROFESSIONALS!!
Another guitar featured is a relatively new model in the vintage market, an original Kramer guitar. But what makes this guitar special is the one-off paint job done by San Francisco artist, Mark Erickson.
