NY Amp Show '10
The Philosopher King is a compressor, sustainer, distortion and polyphonic amplitude synthesizer. Combining their award-winning Philosopher's Tone circuit with a next generation envelope generator, the Philosopher King takes tone several steps further with a full set of ADSR controls including swell, fade, hold level, speed range, one-shot mode, selectable auto reset, CV i/o and expression pedals for swell and fade times.
With the Swell and Fade functions switched off, the Philosopher King provides optical compression with endless sustain on tap. Adjustable compression (ratio), sustain (threshold) and treble (2k cut / boost) controls allow the musician to tailor the nature of the effect to meet the needs of the material at hand. From a subtle dash of added punch to massive, over-the-top howling sustain, the Philosopher King delivers clean, powerful optical compression. The grit control blends in a layer of sweet harmonic distortion that plays nice with other gain pedals as well as amplifier-generated tube distortion.
The Philosopher King's swell function provides a pick triggered volume swell effect. The volume swell can be reset at any moment by muting or held open by continuous playing. This "slow gear" type effect is smooth and controllable with variable timing from extremely fast to very slow.
The fade function can be used independently of the swell and is also pick triggered. A new feature of the decay cycle in this pedal is the ability to fade out from peak level only partially, bringing the audio down to a predetermined level, set by the hold control. The hold level is then maintained until the player releases the note to close the cycle. With the auto reset turned on, the cycle will begin again immediately, creating undulating amplitude modulation and even pulsating tremolo stutter effects at faster decay settings. With the auto-reset turned off, the player determines the exact timing for the beginning of the next cycle.
Another new feature is the one shot mode, which causes the Philosopher King to run through the swell / fade / hold / release cycle regardless of what is played after the cycle is triggered. In this mode, the Philosopher King creates complex waves of amplitude modulation on top of the music coming from your instrument. A trigger input jack allows the swell and fade functions to be controlled by an external source such as a band mate or drum track.
The Zagray is a single-channel amp loaded with one 12AY7 and two 12AX7 preamp tubes. The power section has an ECC82 and two 7591 tubes. Both the power and output transformers are custom-wound toroids. The front panel controls are Bottom, Bass Treble, Gain, Dip - Hump, Drive, Crystal, and Volume. Some noteworthy features include the SC/90/HB switch that is used to engage with a particular guitar/pickup configuration to give the tone a distinct voicing. Also, the Dip/Hump control has four positions set at half-octave frequencies.
The new company showed off two basses and one guitar. Matt "Cavey" Blake says he gets most of his design ideas from his other passion in life—hot rod cars. The guitar model is called Nailed is a 25.5" scale with an all maple body and neck with a paudak and yellow heart fretboard. It has a unique neck design in that Blake describes as "not a neck-thru and not a bolt-on, it's my version of both—it really seems to work." The Low Rider bass has Nordstrand pickups and is built on a 35" scale. Matt also built the guitar stand holding Cavey's Creations.
Cavey's Creations neck design uses two different pieces of solid wood for the fretboard and neck, which is also connected to wood surrounding the pickups.
Eclipse is one of the only effects processor to feature 24-bit digital conversion and 96kHz sampling. They've packed almost 100 algorithms into Eclipse along with a two effects block design. The dual routing configurations let you use Eclipse as two independent effects processors; ideal for the smaller, budget-conscious studio. The two effects blocks' inputs and outputs can be configured for stereo or mono. Or, select a preset that combines two algorithms or recursive combinations for big multi-effects without sacrificing quality.
here's quick, seamless pitch shifting including our innovative Micro pitch shift, which FOH engineers and vocalists have come to rely on for turning good vocal performances into great ones. Eclipse boasts no fewer than 11 reverberation algorithms plus four plex algorithms. Originally developed for Eventide's industry-standard Orville™ and DSP 7000 series, these reverbs have been carefully and faithfully transplanted into Eclipse. And all reverbs are true stereo in and out, not mono in, stereo out. The vast array of delays lets you design lush, dense soundscapes. You'll find band delays, chorus delays, comb delays, ducked delays, ring delays and pan delays. And with 20 seconds of memory per effects block, Eclipse is a looper's delight. It's easy to get lost in the 20-second mono loop, 10-second dual loops, 20-second reverse loop, and 10-second dual reverse loop. Remember, these looping presets running on one FX block leaves the other FX block available for adding texture or dimension.
In studio, on stage or at home, the VB-101 is a solution for quick, easy and silent miking of your bass and guitar amplifiers. Just plug your amplifier to the VB-101 instead of a speaker cabinet, directly at the power output. The Torpedo VB-101 replaces the usual mic'ing process by a powerful simulation of the speaker cabinet, the microphone, the microphone preamplifier, and the studio acoustic environment. The mic'ing process then takes place silently, with perfect control over the most important parameters: choice of speaker cabinet among many models, choice of microphone, and placement of the microphone around the cabinet.
The T Model or tARKus head is Ark's attempt to go for a Trainwreck-style, dual 6V6 amp. The tone is described as chimey, crunchy and punchy all at the same time. It's a non-master volume amp with controls including Presence, Power Amp Boost, Bass, Mid, Treble, and Preamp Boost.
The all new Ark Rhino is a 70 watt all tube bass and jazz guitar amplifier. Continuing with the resonant cab approach they used on the Model B cab they ended up with an organic and "woody" sounding cab that really compliments the unique design of the circuit. The Rhino is a master volume amp that can achieve a light but rich overdrive with the preamp gain at max. A bright switch is added along with the Presence, Bass, Mid and Treble controls. The preamp was originally designed for jazz guitar and we modified it to work well for both bass and jazz guitar.
The Comet Signature is similar to other company's Private Stock collections. Only the finest examples of each species of wood are used - the once in a lifetime pieces. Every "Signature Model" is a one off and has unique features.
Inspired by the classic styling's of the 1960's surf era, the Rock-Rite features a classic tone with some modern appointments. The Rock-Rite features our modern 2-bolt neck construction, a method of neck attachment that is simply stronger, more durable and tighter than a four-bolt can achieve. The ergonomically designed heal block allows near seamless access to the upper registers. Tonally, the 2-bolt separates itself by improving string attack and enhancing both note bloom and sustain.
The Comet is their flagship model and features fast and comfortable necks. The Standards come with an Eastern rock maple top on a mahogany body, quarter-sawn multi-lam neck with a pau ferro fretboard, Hipshot hardware, and custom wound pickups.
The Absinthe is a high-powered 30W single-ended power section featuring parallel EL34s. It's also compatible with 6V6, 6L6, KT66, KT77, and 5881 power tubes, providing more options for customizing the tone. The MKI Americano built on a similar platfrom to the famous British fuzz circuits of yore, but with all-American components.
The Black Cat Custom Professional MKII is their take on the iconic 1960s Sola Sound Tone Bender Professional MKII, made famous by Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton among others. The Black Cat MKII is wired point-to-point on double turrets, just like the MKI Americano. However, they opted for a more traditional approach, rather than repeating the Americano theme. Their component selection for the MKII reflects an old-school British flair, using a Newmarket NKT274 and two Philips OC75 transistors, and Mullard tropical fish capacitors.
The Black Cat Bass Octave Fuzz is a modern recreation of the rare and valuable Maestro Bass Brassmaster, which was used in the seventies by bass players such as John Entwhistle (The Who), Chris Squire (Yes), and Kyle Brock (Eric Johnson/Electromagnets). The Bass Octave Fuzz allows the player to blend the clean signal into the mix along with the fuzz. The result is a monstrous roar of fuzz with a thunderous low-end rumble.
